Arts and Crafts rugs come from the movement of the same name which experienced its peak in the early 20th century. The focus during this time was on natural materials like wood, metal, glass and textiles. Shapes were geometric and lines clean. You may hear the Arts and Crafts style referred to as Mission style. Authentic rugs from this time period are often hand hooked and feature patterns of fruits and florals. Many of them are done in earthy, warm tones which are a characteristic of this decor style.

Of course, not everyone is going to want an actual antique rug from the early 1900s. The ones that are in good shape are certainly going to be very expensive. A better choice is to choose a reproduction. Reproductions are designed to look and feel exactly like the original rugs they are designed to resemble. Your rug will look like a priceless antique but will be in brand new condition. Reproductions can range in price from cheap to expensive. The lower priced choices are often those mass-produced in factories. The expensive rugs are going to be handmade, often from wool. Sometimes you will find an affordable handmade rug from crafters in countries like India.

One of the leading artists during the Arts and Crafts movement was William Morris, who not only inspired rugs but wallpaper as well. His works were the trend of the time period, and are commonly reproduced today. Willow trees, marigolds and pomegranates were common subjects for Morris’ rugs and wallpapers. Frank Lloyd Wright was another leader in the Arts and Crafts movement, and his architectural designs are commonly used today as inspirations for this style of rug.

Arts and Crafts rugs can be purchased in many different places. If you know how to recognize this style, you will see it offered from a variety of sellers. Lower end choices can be found at home improvement and home decor stores. More expensive rugs can be purchased from specialty rug stores. Many people these days choose to shop online. There is certainly plenty of variety on the Internet. If you do choose to buy your floor coverings online, watch out for high shipping costs. Because some rugs are quite heavy and large, it may be somewhat costly to ship them to your home.

The Southwest United States is an area rich with culture and heritage. From this region we get so many delights, from spicy Tex-Mex food to turquoise jewelry. Southwest arts and crafts are probably what this area is best known for, however. For ages, artists and crafters have been creating beautiful handmade pieces that let you take a bit of desert magic home with you. There are certainly many different pieces to choose from.

For example, a hand sculpted terra cotta vase filled with blossoms, grasses or even a cactus makes a beautiful accent on any shelf or table. Terra cotta is also sometimes used to sculpt figurines, such as those of Native Americans or animals. Many people choose a Southwest design for their homes. Think textured walls, lots of wood and warm, earthy colors contrasted with touches of silver and turquoise blue. Geometric patterns like squares and triangles are commonly seen in this style of home decor.

The dreamcatcher is a craft traditionally made by the Native Americans which is thought to encourage pleasant dreams when hung over one’s bed. These days, people are displaying dreamcatchers in most any room as objects of art. Beading and fringe are characteristics of many Southwest area crafts. The beautiful hand woven rugs that come from this region work beautifully on the floor or on the wall as decorative hangings.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the Southwest is known for its beautiful jewelry crafted from turquoise and silver. The jewelry pieces done in this style are most always big and bold handmade pieces that make a statement. You will also find Southwest style jewelry featuring other gems like onyx and agate. Intricate beading is another common characteristic of jewelry from this area. This style of jewelry is so popular you can buy it basically anywhere, even places that seem worlds away from the sun kissed Southwest.

You don’t have to live in the Southwest to enjoy Southwest arts and crafts. Because they’re so popular, you can likely find this style in many stores. Shopping online is a great way to order artwork made in this region. You can even try your hand at crafting your very own handmade works. For example, there are dreamcatcher kits and jewelry making kits with a decidedly Southwestern flair. Or, try painting some geometric patterns on a large terra cotta pot. There are many ways you can express your creativity with Southwest style crafts.

Lighting is an important part of any home. Everyone needs lighting, however the lighting you choose is a matter of personal preference. Lamps have served as not only functional items but also artistic creations for many years. Arts and crafts lighting is one of the most popular styles for homes, especially if the interior or exterior of the home is also designed in this style. Also called Mission and/or Craftsman style, Arts and Crafts is a design movement created in the early 1900s at the tail end of the Victorian era.

The characteristics of this style include clean, straight lines and geometric designs. Ornamentation is kept to a minimum and the focus is on function rather than form, although you will find the pieces made in this style are still quite eye-catching. Natural materials, especially wood and wrought iron, are used abundantly in Mission style homes. Woods are kept dark and paint colors are often dark and warm in tone as well. Therefore, it is extremely important to utilize good lighting to brighten up your home. Without the proper light, your home may look dark and depressing. Lighting rooms properly is important when it comes to making the most of your interior decor.

When shopping for light fixtures you will find lots of square shapes and art glass being used. Wood is a common material for light fixtures which attach to the wall, and wrought iron is commonly used in chandelier style light fixtures. Experiment with different bulb wattage to find what looks best in your home. There are all kinds of bulbs available these days that come in different brightness levels for every preference. Many people go for soft white bulbs for the most natural look. There are also bulbs designed to mimic natural light for the most attractive look.

Arts and Crafts lighting is the perfect accompaniment for your Mission style home. You can find this style of lighting fixture sold in many home improvement and lighting specialty stores. Some of the leading names in the industry such as Stuart and Hathaway offer gorgeous lighting choices done in this popular style. Even though the Arts and Crafts movement spanned from around 1900 to 1925, it is still a common and beloved style of decor and design today.

The Arts and Crafts movement is often also called the Mission style period of exterior and interior design. This movement, at least as far as homes were concerned, featured lots of dark woods and geometric patterns. Many people think of this style as somewhat minimalist. However, you might be surprised to learn that this style was often combined with the Victorian style of decorating for a tasteful marriage of simplicity and beauty. Both periods happened around the same time, so this was a reasonable thing to do. Nowhere is this more evident than in Arts and Crafts wallpaper.

With the Mission style of decor, textured walls in an earthy tone are common. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up the idea of wallpaper. Wallpaper of the time period featured incredible images of the famous Morris flowers which included daisies and marigolds. Morris himself created 144 different wallpaper patterns which were very popular during his time period and are often painstakingly recreated today. Back when the Mission and Victorian styles were at their height, wallpaper was a very involved procedure and was something reserved for the very wealthy.

These days, wallpaper is affordable and accessible. Today’s high-end wallpaper designers and manufacturers like Bradbury and Bradbury Art Wallpapers are producing gorgeous wallpapers modeled after the luxurious, ornate designs of the Arts and Crafts time period. Even if you shop for wallpaper at your local home improvement or paint store, you can find great choices which are reminiscent of this time period. If you want your home to have a more Victorian flair, go for lush floral and fruit patterns. If you like the Mission style better, choose textured wallpapers in a solid color or spice walls up with a geometric border.

The great thing about Arts and Crafts wallpaper is the variety available. There are so many Victorian, Mission and Southwestern themed coverings for walls these days. You can find the perfect choice for any room. Wallpaper today is easier than ever to apply and remove. It’s certainly not the labor-intensive chore it was in the old days. Most people are able to put up their own wallpaper in about a day or even less, depending on the size of the room. If you’re not sure of your ability to hang wallpaper, an experienced professional is as close as your local Yellow Pages!

Arts and Crafts furniture making is a hobby undertaken by many amateur woodworkers. The Arts and Crafts movement happened between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is also commonly called Mission or Craftsman style. The term Mission is likely the most recognizable to describe this type of furniture design. Some think Mission got its name from the fact that the furniture was functional, while others think the style was derived from actual missions in the state of California. Either way, this style remains one of the most beloved for homes and furniture.

This furniture style focuses on natural materials and clean, functional lines. You certainly won’t see lots of intricate ornamental carvings on these pieces. Geometric shapes are big in this design style. Functional adornments are often crafted from hammered metal or wrought iron. Art glass is another commonly used material you will see in the Mission style home. If you are a woodworker who wants to attempt crafting Mission style furniture, you will need the right materials and some good plans.

The most common types of wood used in this style of furniture making are cherry and oak. Lighter woods are not used as often as richer, darker woods. The beauty of these pieces is not in the ornamentation, but in the quality. You will need to ensure your wood shop is properly outfitted with the right tools. A good table saw, router, sander and power drill will get you started. You might also want to use clear varnish to impart a shiny finish to your furniture. When it comes to the actual furniture plans, there are plenty of them out there from which you can choose.

Probably the best way to find Arts and Crafts furniture making plans is through books devoted to the subject. Because this design style is so popular, you will find lots of books available. A few good choices for the amateur woodworker interested in making this style of furniture include Mission Furniture You Can Build: Authentic Techniques and Designs for the Home Woodworker by John Wagner, Mission Furniture: How to Make It by Henry Haven Windsor, and In the Craftsman Style: Building Furniture Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Tradition by Fine Woodworking.

The Arts and Crafts style, also sometimes known as Mission style, was a popular architectural and decorative style of the early 1900s. This movement overlapped the end of the Victorian Age and welcomed a more simple, efficient style. Shapes and lines were geometric and clean, and homes were substantially smaller than their Victorian ancestors. There was no need for large ballrooms, servants quarters or massive kitchens anymore. Families on a budget desired more efficient and affordable homes. These days, many people use Arts and Crafts old floor plans to design their new homes.

The exterior of the average Arts and Crafts home features low gable style roofs which have decorative beams underneath. Eave overhangs provide more protection from rain and snow while adding visual interest. Stucco and brick were commonly used building materials for homes during this time period. Many families today find the need to modify the old floor plans to suit their needs. For example, today’s modern families desire a more open home design with space that flows more efficiently. They also often need to add extra rooms to suit their family’s needs.

Because this style is still so popular today, there are plenty of modern interpretations of the old fashioned designs. If you are considering using this style to build your home, look at as many finished homes as you can to get an idea about what you like and don’t like. You can view many homes online and even take virtual tours which take you inside the home. The Internet is also a great place to download floor plans. Another idea is to use design software to create your ideal floor plan yourself. You don’t have to be an architect to use many of these programs, like the ones sold by Better Homes and Gardens.

Of course, you can work with an architect if you choose. If you have Arts and Crafts old floor plans that you like but need a few changes to, an architect can design the perfect floor plan for you. You might also want to get some books which contain modern floor plans done in this beautiful and efficient design style. One popular title is Craftsman Homes: More than 40 Plans for Building Classic Arts and Crafts Style Cottages, Cabins and Bungalows by Gustav Stickley.

Winter arts and crafts are a great way to celebrate the season. There are plenty of fun crafts that children and adults can enjoy. Being creative together is a great way to bring parents and their kids closer. One of the most simple yet most rewarding crafts to make during the wintertime is a wreath. Wreaths are ideal because they allow plenty of room for creativity and can be displayed throughout the season. Not only that, but it is easy to find lots of materials for wreath making at your local craft store.

You will need the wreath base, which is simply a plain wreath woven from twigs. Depending on what kind of finished product you want, you may want to go for a foam wreath in a ring shape. Wreaths come in a variety of different sizes from small to large. There are lots of creative ways to dress up your wreath. For example, try covering your wreath with colorful holiday candies. This can be achieved using a hot glue gun. Or, try wrapping your wreath in festive ribbon and gluing on fruits and flowers. A light spray of artificial snow gives a frosty look.

Making their own holiday cards to send to friends and family is a perfect project for younger kids. All you need is either some sturdy card stock or even colorful construction paper. Provide kids with plenty of art supplies so they can be creative. Cotton balls and non-toxic glue or paste is a great way to create the illusion of snow. Don’t forget the markers, washable paint, and glitter. Homemade cards made with love are sure to be treasured for years to come, and they’re a great way to keep kids busy.

If you’re looking for more ideas for winter arts and crafts, there are plenty of web sites and books that feature lots of ideas, instructions and color photos. A great book for kids is Winter Day Play! Activities, Crafts and Games for Indoors and Out by Nancy F. Castaldo. If you enjoy needlepoint, check your craft store for winter themed cross stich and embroidery patterns. Older kids and teens may like the small cross stitch kits available that come with everything you need to create a stitched picture, including the fabric, needle, thread and hoop.

The colonial times were one of the most fascinating and important in American history. Colonial arts and crafts serve as a creative reminder of this exciting time. Many antique and art enthusiasts enjoy collecting colonial arts and crafts, or at least reproductions of them. If you’re a parent, it’s likely your child has or will bring home some of their own artistic reproductions of creative work done during this historical time period. Whether you’re a serious antiques collector or just want a little something to accent your home, colonial style pieces are a perfect choice.

There are a variety of crafts from which you can choose. Silver smithing, needlepoint, wood carving and glass making are examples of commonly practiced artistic trades during colonial times. Colonial silversmiths created gorgeous vases, bowls, utensils and coins, while wood carvers and furniture makers crafted everything from tables to bed frames to childrens’ toys. Needlepoint and embroidery were feminine pursuits. The women of colonial times created wall hangings, clothing, quilts and more using their talents.

Glassmaking was an important trade in colonial Jamestown. To this day, you can travel to this historic location to see glassmakers recreating the work done by the original colonists. Today, glass is blown into amazingly creative and colorful pieces. Placing a few colorful glass pieces around your home can make quite an impact. In colonial times, glassmakers focused more on practical pieces like window panes, bottles and vials, vases and basic drinking glasses than on objects d’art. These days, glass is often fashioned into items that are not only functional but beautiful as well.

If you’re a parent looking for a creative activity for your child, teach them how to make a colonial craft. Fragrant pomanders are easy to make and were commonly presented as Christmas gifts during colonial times. An orange pomander, for example, is simply an orange with fragrant cloves inserted into the skin in a decorative way and hung on a braided cord. Silhouettes are also an easy-to-do craft that was popular during colonial times. Try checking out an arts and crafts book from the library or bookstore for more ideas. One good title is The Heritage Sampler: A Book of Colonial Arts and Crafts by Cheryl G. Hoople and Richard Cuffari.

The piano is certainly one of the most beloved and beautiful instruments. If you are a pianist or know someone who is, why not indulge in some piano related arts and crafts? Music is an art form, just like painting or creative writing. Therefore, it is a natural progression to pair music with other types of art for a creative result. The Smithsonian Museum once held an exhibition called A Celebration of the Piano: Selections from the Archives of American Art.

It helps to be creative when thinking about this type of art. For example, you could present the piano player in your life with a brooch or decorative pin that looks like a piano. Or, make a collage using copies of their favorite music, glued in an artistic way with pictures of the person and decorative images that reflect not only their love for music but their personal preferences. Even giving them a gift of music can be artistic in nature. For example, pianist and songwriter Tori Amos has a box set available that comes in a box made to look like a small piano.

One of the most common places the piano shows up is on canvas. There are many prints out there featuring pianos. Some are romantic oil paintings, others are modern photographs. There is an artist named Virgil C. Stephens who does gorgeous modern style oil paintings depicting pianos as subject, but his works are pricey. Ebay is a great place to browse original works and prints from artists of all kinds. Some artists sell their original works and prints there on a regular basis. The best part is, prices are often very affordable.

Piano related arts and crafts make the perfect gift for a loved one who enjoys playing the piano. If your child takes piano lessons, presenting them with such a gift following a recital can be a moment they will treasure for a lifetime. By taking into account one’s hobbies and favorite things when gift shopping, you are telling them that you value them and put special effort into shopping for them. Whether your gift is a $10 piece of piano-shaped costume jewelry or a $1000 oil painting, the recipient is sure to be delighted!

The Arts and Crafts movement, commonly referred to as Mission style, is a popular style of interior and exterior decorating. When you think of this style, imagine an abundance of dark wood such as oak and cherry, lots of open space, geometric patterns and the artistic use of window glass. Often you will notice a distinct Southwestern flair which often shows up in furnishings and art pieces. Arts and Crafts home decor is plentiful even today and can make a beautiful addition to any room, regardless of what style your home is.

Many people choose to express their creativity on the walls of their home. The perfect backdrop for Mission style wall hangings is a neutral toned wall that is lightly textured. If you like, you can go warmer and darker with your walls. Shades can range from light caramel to rich burnt umber. Wall hangings such as Southwestern pieces of art and decorative fringed quilts are gorgeous against such a backdrop. Or, go for artistic wallpaper. There are solid textured wallpapers, Southwestern style wallpapers and even Victorian style wallpapers which can work very well in many rooms.

Natural materials are so important to the Arts and Crafts movement. Wrought iron mirrors which feature ornate shapes and designs are the perfect accent against the dark, rich woods so common to this style home. Decorative glass is another ideal accent for any room as it helps balance heavy iron and warm wood. Terra cotta pots holding bright blooms and lush houseplants are another perfect addition to your home. Southwestern style floor vases are great in empty corners to hold decorative dried grasses.

Sculpture is another type of Arts and Crafts home decor that can make a room look its best. Bronze is a commonly utilized material for arts and crafts sculpture, but you’ll also find stone, wood and even glass adornments shaped into artistic pieces. Sculptures look great when strategically positioned on mantles, shelves, tables and desks. Speaking of mantles, a stone fireplace with a dark wood mantle is one the most romantic and beautiful ways to incorporate the Mission style into your home. The key to decorating any home is to choose pieces which are appealing to you and work well with the other elements of the room.
