Gourds are interesting members of the squash family that come out around harvest time. These things are not considered edible and are purchased for decorative reasons. Gourds are basically misshapen squash and pumpkins that end up being in demand right around Thanksgiving because they are a popular centerpiece. There are a lot of creative things you can do with gourds and if you can find them they can really add a festive fall ambiance to your home dÈcor.

African Gourds

Gourds grow all around the world. However, African gourds are really unique and striking. When we think of gourds, we picture the misshapen objects that we can pick up in the supermarket. Yes, these are gourds. However, African gourds are slightly different. First, it is important to note that the term ‘gourd’ is pretty broad. Members of the gourd family include squash in pumpkin. So, gourds do not have to be misshapen squash plants. The term actually encompasses a whole family of squashes and pumpkins and vegetables.
