Sponge painting is a very simple way to add some flare to any room in your home. It varies from traditional painting as you don’t use any brushes. Instead you use large sized sponges and dip them lightly into the paint. You then dab the sponges on the walls and twist and turn them. You can add lots of sponge marks or paint or very few. It all depends on the effect you are trying to accomplish.

When it comes to the concept of painting, there are so many areas covered that it is almost impossible to cover them all. Painting can be considered hard work or a fun way to relax depending on how you view it and the type of painting you are doing. Some types of painting require special skills while others merely involve being able to move a paint brush or paint roller across the room.

Chinese Painting

Chinese painting is a specific form of Chinese art and it is identified as the oldest form of artistic tradition in the world. The specifics of Chinese painting are passed down from one generation to the next so that the culture has continually remained affluent in this particular art form. For those of you not familiar with Chinese painting, it is very similar to the concept of calligraphy only it is applied to pictures and scenes rather than to words.

True Chinese painting doesn’t use any types of oils so when you see such paintings you can identify them as poor imitations of this true art form. Most Chinese painting is completed using black ink and a thin brush but some of the newer paintings feature colored ink as well. The paintings may be done on high quality paper, silk, or on walls. Many Chinese paintings were placed on heavy paper that was rolled up after it was dried called a scroll.

Oil Painting

Oil painting can serve as a means for showing your creative side in regards to art. However, learning how to use them correctly takes some time to master. This is because the different properties in various oils and solvents used for oil painting. Sometimes the paints are used directly from the tube and other times they are mixed with the oils and the solvents.

You have to be careful how you apply the layers on top of each other because you don’t want the top layers of it to dry before the ones underneath. If this happens the overall look of the painting will have various cracks in it that aren’t appealing. The secret is to add more oil as you add more layers to the same area on the canvass.

Painting Supplies

For any painting project that is a necessity or for leisure activity, you need to have a variety of good quality painting supplies on hand. For safety reasons, you need to make sure you always have plenty of fresh air getting into the area where you are painting. This will prevent the fumes from the paint from affecting you in an adverse manner. You also need to prep your work area and mask off any areas that don’t need to be painted. If you are painting on an easel you might want to place a drop cloth on the floor.
