Class Envy And Limousines
Limousines have always seemed like the hallmark of a truly special event. I have never ridden in a limousine, but I’ve dreamed about plenty of limousines in my life.
It seems like every time a teenager went to a prom on television or in a movie, they rode in limousines. I thought that when I was in high school, it would turn out like a Cinderella story and limousines would be everywhere at the prom.
In all actuality, I did not even attend my prom. I have no idea if there were limousines there or not. In my imagination there were.
Limousines as a class indicator are very prevalent in our society. If they weren’t rich people wouldn’t be riding around in them telling everyone else how great they are.
Hollywood stars routinely show up at events in limousines. I only know this because the entertainment news channel has told me this and has shown the grand arrivals. I think that stars want to waste their money in the most ostentatious way they can muster.
The only instance I can even visualize myself near limousines is in Las Vegas. I have this picture in my mind, based on the entertainment industry no doubt, of Las Vegas having limousines everywhere. I have no idea if this is true because I’ve never been to Las Vegas.
I’ve often wondered about the kind of ego you have to have to want to hire limousines while you are on vacation in New York. I don’t know who really does this, but Hollywood has made it seem like it is a regular occurrence.
I can only hope that it isn’t. I think that the streets of New York are probably already full enough without overgrown limousines hogging up the lanes so that rich people can get to the theater on time.
I think maybe I have a little bit of class envy. I’m not sure if that is really what you would call it, though. I just have very different ideas when it comes to transportation. I think that fuel efficiency is more exciting than luxurious limousines.
