Wild Berries
Wild berries grow in locations all over the world. The majority of them are edible and delicious but there are some you should never eat. This can be difficult to decide though as some of them look very similar to berries you can eat. You will often find strawberries, blue berries, black berries, and raspberries in the wild. They will likely be smaller than those you purchase at the market but very delicious just the same.
If you aren’t sure if a wild berry is edible or not, leave it alone if you are only hiking and stumble across them. If you are lost in the wilderness and need to gather any food source you can then try one. Let it linger in your mouth for a period of time before you chew it. If it tastes good then you can be fairy sure it is alright to eat them. If it has a terrible taste then spit it out and don’t touch them.
It is a good idea that you know what poison ivy berries look like though because some people find them very tasty! While they won’t kill you, they can make you extremely ill if you consume a large amount of it.
Some common wild berries you may encounter that are delicious to eat include salmon berries. They look like strawberries but they are a light orange color and they are smaller in size. Thimble berries resemble small raspberries. Black cap raspberries are often overlooked as an edible item by people because they are mistaken for rotten raspberries as they feature a very dark color.
There are some wild berries that won’t harm you but that you still shouldn’t consumer. The most common is the bitter cherry, yet many people want to eat this wild berry because of the rich red color of them. They look delicious but they are unbelievably bitter. Robins and other types of birds love to eat them.
You should also avoid the red elderberry because it will cause you to have diarrhea. That is one inconvenient side effect you don’t want to have to deal with while out in the wilderness enjoying a leisurely stroll!
