Forklift Safety

Forklifts offer a very valuable service in many different types of businesses. They are used to load and upload trucks, save space, and moving products from one area to the next. It is essential that forklift safety is covered so that each person operating them knows what to expect. Too many people make the mistake of thinking that because they can operate a vehicle they can operate a forklift without any type of training.

There are many issues that affect forklift safety that you need to consider. The size of the load as well as how it is handled is important. You want your forklift to be operating at a steady speed. Too much power can result in the forklift tipping over as can an unstable load. The terrain you are driving it on can also affect your ability to operate the forklift successfully. It is very important that a hard hat and a seat belt are always worn while operating a forklift.

Inspecting the forklift before using it is very important. Take a look around it for any obstacles and check the tires. Make sure it is in good working condition before you attempt to operate it. You also need to follow the rules of the road when it comes to watching out for pedestrians. If you work in a loud factory you need to realize other workers may not hear the forklift coming.

To help ensure everyone is safe whether they are operating the forklift or assisting there are some standard hand signals to be used. The cover everything from tilting the forks, backing up, turning, and stopping. These hand signals are a great way to make sure everyone has the communication they need to be safe while forklifts are in use.

Some companies go a step further and require a complete physical before they will hire someone as a forklift operator. The individual has to successfully show they have no vision problems that can’t be corrected with glasses or contacts, they don’t have hearing loss that can’t be corrected with hearing aids, they aren’t physically limited from completing all the aspects of operating a forklift, they don’t have a neurological disorder that affects their balance or perception, and they aren’t taking any ongoing medications that can adversely affect their ability to operate a forklift safely.
