Writing a Resume for Graduate School
When you apply for graduate school, there is some important paperwork you will need to include. You will not only need to write an essay, but also a resume for graduate school. You might also hear this resume referred to as a curriculum vitae or CV. A CV is a bit different from a traditional resume because it is academically focused. You should ideally have a CV throughout your college career that you update as you gain more academic and professional experience.
The first thing you’ll want to list on your CV is your contact information. Your name goes at the top, in larger font than the rest of the text on the page. Under your name you will list your contact information which includes your address, telephone number and email address. Next, you will want to detail your education. This is a very important part of the document. Include where you attended school, what your major was, the dates you attended school and the date you received your degree, and your grade point average. If you are still in school, include your estimated date of degree completion.
Next, you will want to detail any awards or special recognition you’ve received. If the only award you’ve received are your graduation honors, include them as part of the first section which details your education. If you’ve had any experience as a teacher’s assistant or have provided any instruction to other students, it should be listed next. Then, you’ll want to detail any research projects you’ve been a part of.
Your CV should also include your technical and professional experience and any skills you possess. A CV can span several pages and is much longer than a traditional resume. You might also want to include things like reports or articles you’ve had published, professional organization affiliations and references from colleagues, peers or mentors. Many grad students seek professional help when writing their CV, as it is a very important document that is very detailed.
Writing a resume for graduate school can be a daunting process at first. With professional help or even the guidance of a teacher or counselor, you can write the ideal CV for yourself. As the years pass, you will find yourself updating and adding to your CV. This document will be not only what helps you get into graduate school but also what helps you land the job you want following graduation.
