Band
Band is one of the most popular extracurricular activities that students get involved in. Most schools allow student to join band in the 5th or 6th grade. This is a great opportunity to learn how to read music and how to play an instrument. Most students are responsible for purchasing their instrument or renting them from the school. Band students generally work hard to learn a set of songs that they can perform at school programs and at sporting events.
As students get older the music they learn will get more difficult. Students also have the opportunity to continue with the same type of instrument or to learn how to play a new one. The most common instruments in band are the trumpet and saxophone for boys. Girls tend to prefer the clarinet and the flute. Both boys and girls enjoy playing the drums though.
For junior high and high school band students there are plenty of football and basketball games to play at. Many of them perform at half time on the football field and the basketball court. There are different types of marching and formatting that have to be learned for this in addition to playing the instrument.
Many bands participate in community parades and special events. It is also common for bands to compete in local, state, and national competitions. They take place at different places each year. The bands that are accepted to each level depends on the qualifications of the band.
While it can be challenging to be in band it is definitely a rewarding activity to be a part of. Most people who are in band enjoy music and find it to be a great way to relax and to spend time playing the instrument of their choice. In addition to learning how to play that instrument the students learn how to properly care for them.
Band students are generally graded on their motivation to learn the music, their attitude, and their attendance. This takes the pressure off for those students who aren’t as musically inclined as other students. If you aren’t sure if band is right for you consider trying it for a semester to find out. You may discover you love it and you want to continue it.
