How to Be a Wedding Planner

If you love weddings and all their intricate details, you just might want to be a wedding planner. If you can keep your cool any time and any place under any circumstances, you just might have what it takes to enjoy the wonderful world of wedding planning. Your only problem is ëhow to be a wedding planner.’

Just because you planned your own wedding doesn’t mean you can plan other weddings. It’s a good start but you aren’t in business yet. If you live in a small town, volunteer to help your friends plan their weddings. When you help them to create the wedding of their dreams with your creativity and eye for details, you will start to build a reputation. After a few years of creating your reputation, set yourself up in business and start being a wedding planner. Good luck. In a small town, you will be fine.

Big time wedding planners did not become sought after quickly. They might appear to be overnight successes, but we all know there is no such thing. Hard work, sleepless nights, and long hours are the reason for the overnight success. Again the question; how to be a wedding planner. If there is a wedding planner school, I don’t know it. I would imagine there are several wedding planner online schools or kits. You are on your own.

If you really want to be a wedding planner, write up a resume, visit wedding planners, and offer to be a free intern. They aren’t going to hire you when you have no experience. You have a better chance if you work for free. Consider the free work the price of your education.

A good intern watches and learns. She is constantly watching to see where she can help and never gets in the way. If she is asked for an opinion, she gives it. I wouldn’t disagree with the wedding planner in front of a client, but when asked be honest. Learn your sense of style even if it clashes with the bride and the wedding planner. That happens all the time. Do you really think every wedding planner agrees with every bride she plans a wedding for? If you do, I have some real estate to sell you. The good wedding planner helps the bride to coordinate her ideas into a spectacular wedding.

A lot of wedding planning is steering the bride’s taste and ideas into something workable. Many brides come to the wedding planner with crazy, idealistic ideas that simply won’t work. The wedding planner’s job is to put her bride’s ideas into a realistic mix. She is part planner and part psychologist. She has to analyze her bride to see how she can steer her in the right direction. If that fails, then let the girl have an ugly wedding. At least one person will be happy.

If you intern in order to learn how to be a wedding planner, be ready to do the worst and most boring jobs. Until you prove yourself, you will be given only the most menial tasks. Be sure that your ego won’t be hurt by cleaning and picking up after others. You begin your wedding planner career as someone’s lackey. Remember you are there to learn. When you are experienced enough, you will start getting the most difficult jobs.
