Wedding Planner Career
If you choose wedding planning as a career, be ready to work like you have never worked before. When you are planning a wedding, it takes over your life. You have to be at the beck and call of your bride and talented in many areas. If you are a decorator, psychologist, a florist, everyone’s best friend, a herder, and ready to do most any task, you should decide on a wedding planner career.
Being multi-talented is a must for a wedding planner career. If you don’t have flair or a sense of style, you are in the wrong business. Creativity is also a must. You have to be able to look at a room and envision your client’s perfect wedding. You need to be able to visualize the room brimming with people surrounded by flowers and candles. Your bride’s vision must come to life in that room. The bride, the mother-of-the-the bride and everyone else must leave the wedding and reception feeling like they have just experienced the greatest day of their lives. If they don’t, you won’t prosper.
Being able to arrange flowers and draperies for wedding locations is a real plus for a wedding planner. Because you won’t have to hire a florist, your payoff will be higher. Remember; you are not in the wedding planner business as a sideline. This is your career.
Note taking and thinking on your feet are a must. There are so many details to putting together a wedding that they had to hire you to do them. If the job were easy, you wouldn’t have a job. You are hired to keep the bride and her mother from going crazy. They are to be kept stress free. Stress is yours to bear alone. A wedding planner who stresses out her bride won’t stay in business very long.
Being able to network with vendors is super important. A good wedding planner has a posse of vendors who will do anything for her. They will jump though hoops if asked and then beg for more. They are the cogs that make the wedding machine work. In turn the wedding planner brings them business day after day. It’s a win win situation. Having supreme confidence in one another is essential. Wedding planners really hate using vendors they are unfamiliar with because the trust just isn’t there. If there is a mistake, it’s always the wedding planners fault. Whatever the problem, the wedding planner must make it good. The bride and her mother must be happy. Sometimes you have to keep the groom happy too. That’s rare; the honeymoon is more his deal.
Most important a wedding planner must be a people person. She becomes a member of the family for generally a year. Many times a bride and her planner will bond and become like sisters for the duration of the wedding. Once in awhile they become life long friends. For a career in wedding planning, you must love people, all kinds of people. You have to love the bride when she is freaking out, when she is whining, and even when she is being negative and hates what you are showing her. If you can keep the love going, then you are well on your way to a wedding planning career.
