Godparents
The term Godparent is one that is found in the Christian religion. At the time that a child is baptized their Godparents are identified publicly. Traditionally this is a couple who agree to be role models for the child in a spiritual and personal way but it can be a male and female who aren’t associated with each other.
In many instances they may be asked to care for the child in the event that something happens to the parents. It is also common for multiple children in a family to have different Godparents. The correct terms for them are Godmother and Godfather. They are chosen by the parents the child because of their own beliefs and their connection to the family. It can be good friends, aunts and uncles, or other family members.
In many instances there is a small ceremony for the Godparents immediately after the Baptism that joins the child to them. In some cultures it is expected that the child will spend the first few days following the Baptism living with the Godparents. There are some responsibilities on a regular basis asked of Godparents. They include praying for the child, setting a good example for the child in how you live your own life, and staying connected with the child’s family on a personal and spiritual level.
It is quite an honor in the Christian faith to be asked to be a Godparent. Most individuals only have one or two children that they are Godparents for. You can decline the request to become a Godparent if you don’t feel it is a role you can reasonably be expected to fulfill. Most people are willing to if they are connected to the family and the Church. They want to help the young members of their Church to grow up with a solid foundation of faith.
In most instances Godparents form a very strong bond with the children they have that title for. They feel it is an honor to be a part of that child’s life and do all they can to lead and guide them in the right direction. It can be quite difficult for parents to come to a decision as to who should be the Godparents for their child because it is such a big impact on the life of the child.
