Barter System
Saturday, September 1st, 2007Although bartering still exists, the traditional barter system was in place well before the modern concept of money even existed. For example, there are several cultures in Europe that made their money because they were near salt mines. Salt in those days was considered very valuable. Merchants were trading salt for other goods and services. It is in this way that the salt itself became like a kind of currency. However, it represented a barter arrangement. There are many instances of barter systems like this throughout history.
