Artificial sweeteners are used as a viable substitute for sugar. They add the same flavor to food and drinks but without the negative effects of sugar. They are often used by those who have diabetes and those who are trying to lose weight. The majority of these sweeteners contain no calories at all. Artificial sweeteners are often much sweeter than regular sugar so you don’t need to substitute it on an equal basis.

Cancer Risks

Many people use artificial sweeteners in an effort to eat healthier but still enjoy the sugar taste they like so much. They also do it to help them lose weight but there is conflicting information about the effects of these artificial sweeteners in the long run. One concern is that they can increase a person’s risk of various types of cancer.

Fructose

Fructose is a type of sugar that is commonly used in foods and beverages to make them have the sweet taste so many of us enjoy. It comes from pure sugar which is called sucrose. Chemically it has the same structure as glucose. It is only the molecular structure that is different.

Saccharin

Saccharin is a very popular sugar substitute but this artificial sweetener hasn’t always been widely accepted. In the 1970’s it was linked to bladder cancer in laboratory rats. This scared the public into thinking saccharin would affect their health in adverse ways. The Food and Drug Administration was in the process of banning it in 1977 but instead just added warning labels to the product.
