German Pastries
The Germans have quite the reputation of creating delicious pastries of all kinds. In fact, German pastries are so popular that there is a common time of the day called ‘Kafe und Kuchen’ where people crowd into their local Konditerei, or pastry shop, to enjoy the best coffee and the best German pastries that they can find. Pastry chefs pride themselves on creating traditional specialties and also their own creations. This means that there is a wealth of different kinds of pastries throughout the country.
In order to understand German pastries, you need to understand that there are a lot of different foods that they are known for. The typical pastries such as Apfelstruedel or Apple Strudel are the ones that people most often think of. However, it is important to note that traditional German pastries could vary from region to region and village to village. Maintaining their local identity is something that Germans are very proud of and very eager to do. So when you travel to certain places, such as the Black Forest, you may end up finding different pastries than in Berlin or Munich.
If you want to sample German pastries, the best place to do that is in Germany. However, it is not always realistic to go to Germany to do so. If you live in the United States or anywhere else you could do some research to see if you can find places that sell German pastries. This could be restaurants, bakeries, cafes, or specialty dessert shops. You also may be able to order certain pastries from catalogs so that you can sample them.
If you are feeling really adventurous you could always learn how to cook your own German pastries. You can find the recipes online, in books, or from actual Germans. It is fun to get a hold of family recipes because each person has their own special way of doing things. And, it is a good way to get exposed to pastries you may not have been exposed to.
German pastries are tasty and delicious and very much a part of the culture. If you want to taste them you could either buy them or make them yourself. The best way to experience them, however, is in Germany so you can see them in relation to their culture.
