Acid reflux is made up of chronic symptoms and / or mucosal damage that are caused by the abnormal reflux of stomach contents, namely the powerful stomach acid. When the gastric contents are expelled into the esophagus, this creates discomfort, pain and possibly lasting tissue damage.

Sometimes acid reflux is a physical problem, where the lower esophageal sphincter does not effectively contain the contents of the stomach, and some cases where a hiatal hernia is a factor.

The most common symptom and complaint of those suffering from acid reflux is heartburn, which feels like a burning, stinging or even ripping type of pain around the breastbone area. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing and changes in mucosal linings of the throat. In extreme cases sufferers may develop esophageal ulcers or scarring.

In order to diagnose the condition, patients may be given a barium mixture to drink. This will help show the structure of the esophagus, sphincters and stomach in order to determine a good course of treatment.

Sometimes endoscopy is used to better examine the esophagus, stomach and relating portions of the body. The patient will usually be sedated in order to ease relaxation.

No matter which course of treatment you and your doctor decide to pursue, there are many types of food that tend to be more likely to trigger acid reflux symptoms. Avoiding or decreasing your intake of these foods may help to alleviate the situation.

Acidic, fatty and spicy foods tend to promote gastroesophageal reflux. Coffee, alcohol, vitamin C and calcium supplements are gastric acid stimulants. If you ingest these things, it is best to do so during the day or periods of increased activity. Just before bedtime would be the worst time.

Chocolate and peppermint, onions, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are known acid reflux stimulants. Milk and dairy items should be avoided at bedtime.

Eating smaller meals, elevating the head of your bed and drinking more water have all been shown to have good effects for coping with and managing acid reflux and related conditions.

Though there are a number of heartburn medications on the market, I strongly advise you to find simple solutions, such as avoiding certain foods, before you start medicating the problem. When we treat the symptoms of a disease and do nothing for the underlying causes, it’s only a matter of time before the condition has additional symptoms.

So let’s work with our bodies and do our best to ingest foods that help us and avoid ones that exacerbate our various conditions or concern areas. Start eating a little healthier, and chances are you’ll notice a difference for the better, no matter how mild or severe your version of acid reflux is.

Acid reflux symptoms are mostly the same as general heartburn. Sufferers will experience a burning, stinging or similar sensation in their breastbone area. So what are the symptoms that set acid reflux apart from regular heartburn?

While acid reflux can also be caused by structural abnormalities, so it is set apart from infrequent heartburn symptoms that nearly everyone experiences at some point in his or her life, many of the same paths of treatment can be used to alleviate or stop acid reflux symptoms altogether.

One of the first areas to consider are the foods that you eat. While you may find it time consuming to keep a food diary, the information that you discover could play a big part in controlling your acid reflux.

First, simply write down everything that you eat and the time at which it is eaten. When you have a bout of heartburn, refer to your food journal and see which foods you had eaten right before the symptoms showed up.

You may be able to stop your heartburn suffering simply from avoiding the foods that tend to trigger your acid reflux symptoms. I would try to rule out food culprits before turning to acid reflux drugs.

Though many acid reflux and heartburn drugs are touted to alleviate some core, underlying issues to stop heartburn symptoms, they are primarily about the same thing that most pharmaceutical drugs are about: treating symptoms.

Over time, heartburn drugs are probably not going to do much for your overall health not to mention any damage that your stomach or esophagus may have suffered. When we turn to supplying the body with only clean foods and water it can be surprising just how able it is to heal itself from so many different diseases.

Also, eating foods known to trigger your acid reflux may be better tolerated when eaten earlier in the day. Bedtime seems to be prone to the most occurrences of heartburn. Vitamins and other nutritional supplements are known to trigger acid reflux in many people, so it’s a good idea to take these in the morning time.

Your best bet is to start keeping a food journal. Besides learning to avoid ones that add to heartburn discomfort, over time you’ll notice even finer degrees of which foods make you feel good and give you lasting energy.

No matter what type of acid reflux you suffer from, and no matter the underlying factors to your own particular struggle with heartburn, a change in diet can have remarkable effects upon your management of acid reflux.

There are some foods that seem to encourage heartburn in many people. Among these are general categories such as spicy, high fat and dairy foods. Chocolate, tomatoes and herbal supplements are also known to bring about heartburn like symptoms, particularly if ingested shortly before bedtime.

If you recognize particular foods that seem to effect heartburn, you may find that eating them in the morning instead of closer to bedtime will alleviate your symptoms of heartburn. When eaten during time of wakefulness and activity, the body is better able to contain stomach acids used to digest the food we have eaten.

Many people suffer from heartburn primarily at night time and have found relief by raising the level of the head of their bed. Though simply adding layers of pillows doesn’t have the same effect, raising the entire head end of a bed by at least twelve inches has been shown to lessen heartburn symptoms.

If you still are suffering from acid reflux and diet modification doesn’t seem to help, you should consider seeing a doctor in order to rule out the possibility of structural abnormality or other factors contributing to your acid reflux symptoms.

Even if you end up trying a prescription medicine prescribed by your doctor, it is a very good idea to try and eliminate foods that make heartburn worse, and increase fresh, raw foods.

Acid Reflux Disease is not as ominous as it sounds, unless you are indeed a chronic sufferer that’s only recently found it necessary to try every over the counter heartburn product available. For many people what started as little bouts of heartburn every now and then, grows into more frequent trips to the drug store and before you know it you’re making an appointment with a doctor because you just don’t know what t do next.

Sound familiar? I’ve dealt with heartburn or ‘acid reflux disease’ for most of my adult life. I had made it to the end of the line, as far as my peace of mind and pain tolerance were concerned. Something had to change. And I needed some guidance about how and what to change.

So I went to a doctor appointment and was given a prescription. It kind of worked, but not for long and I soon found myself making another appointment with a different doctor. I was given a prescription for a different medicine. It sort of worked for a while and then didn’t. Are you seeing the pattern?

Yeah, so I decided there must be a better way to deal with acid reflux disease. I started looking toward natural and ancient medicine to see what morsels of wisdom I may find to alleviate my heartburn suffering.

At first reading through the holistic medicine websites seemed every bit as confusing as pharmaceutical and western medicine has always been; a zillion different supplements to choose from instead of the zillion acid reflux drugs.

But as I read I began to understand some of the big differences between modern medicine and ancient medicine of various peoples. Ancient or natural/holistic medicine always works to correct imbalances that are the root causes of the given disease or painful condition.

Modern Western medicine is more concerned with quick results and appearances. Modern medicine treats the symptoms and not the causes, the underlying imbalances that take place from time to time.

Only by simplifying our lives can our body effectively alert us to these imbalances and guide us toward the foods that will help return us to full health. I’ve found that as I quit medicating my heartburn I was able to ‘hear’ my body better. I was able to determine which foods set off acid reflux and which did not.

Over time I’ve continued to make subtle changes I my eating habits and it’s been more than three years since a serious bout of heartburn. I encourage you to look into the underlying causes of your acid reflux as well. Of course everyone’s situation is different, but there are simple things we can do to increase our comfort and wellbeing even if it does not completely alleviate all symptoms.

It is not totally unheard of for people to suffer from acid reflux disease, it is fairly quite common in fact, but reflux is actually common as a baby as well. All though it may at first seem like a foreign concept, it really is a very natural thing as infants experience regurgitation in the first three months after their birth, and this is most common amongst more than half of all normal infants. This reflux can occur in the various actions that a baby will experience such as during coughing, crying, burping, or straining.

Gastro-esophageal reflux is caused when stomach contents come back up into the esophagus, during or after a meal, and this means that food is coming back up through the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. A ring of muscle or sphincter around the bottom end of the esophagus opens and closes to allow the predigested food to pass through to the stomach, and this sphincter opens to release gas after meals in normal infants, children, and adults. When the sphincter opens in infants, the stomach contents often go up through the esophagus and out of the mouth, and often commonly noticed in infants as spitting up.

Most infants with gastro-esophageal reflux grow to be perfectly happy and healthy babies, even though they may spit up or vomit, and it is only with unique cases of acute bouts of reflux that one should consult a doctor or your child’s pediatrician. With gastro-esophageal reflux, the infant may experience a variety of symptoms such as vomiting and spitting up, but also symptoms like irritability and poor feeding. Blood in the stool is also not uncommon. Only a small number of infants have severe symptoms due to the esophageal reflux, and most infants will stop spitting up around twelve to eight months of age.

In a small percentage of those babies with gastro-esophageal reflux, symptoms may result that are of concern, such as poor growth due to an inability to hold down food or refusing to feed due to pain or perhaps even breathing or blood loss from acid burning the esophagus. Though, again, these are in the extremely rare cases where severe symptoms have occurred. By all accounts otherwise, gastro-esophageal reflux in natural in newborns and infants up to a year old, and this should rest those worries and concerns with a more informed viewpoint on the subject.

Gastroesophageal reflux is a growing concern for a large number of people. Sufferers report symptoms including a burning or stinging sensation, as well as other pain or discomfort in the chest and / or stomach regions of the body.

Some people find relief in over the counter heartburn drugs and use them to alleviate symptoms as the need arises. Though there have been advances in common heartburn medicines and their effectiveness, it seems like the plethora of over the counter acid reflux drugs are barely able to keep up with increasing numbers of heartburn patients.

Most people I know are still looking for a heartburn medicine that will actually work effectively and on a consistent basis. I’ve heard many of them remark that a new acid reflux medication will work the first few times, but not very well after that. It seems that a viable solution for some it to cycle between a few different brands or types of medicine.

There are also a host of prescription acid reflux medications, as well as surgical treatment and endoscopic procedures to repair damaged tissues or structural abnormalities. While I’m sure there are cases where surgery or consistent medication would be the best course of action, I find it hard to believe that there is not another underlying cause of the heartburn epidemic.

Did people simply not suffer from heartburn as much in the past, or perhaps not as severely? It seems like if heartburn was as inherent to the human experience as every other television commercial portrays things to be, we would have read about it in historical literature. Maybe people haven’t always suffered from heartburn in the large numbers we see today.

Perhaps many chronic heartburn cases are related more closely to the poor quality of food that many of us eat and not that heartburn is just another condition of being human. But it’s more difficult to realize simple cause and effect relationships when the whole picture is clouded with a third element: treatment of symptoms.

When we treat symptoms of dis-ease with medications of any kind, we’re not allowing our bodies to heal and assist us in finding what it is that our body requires to heal, whether it be sleep, water or particular nutrients, the body will lead us to what it is that will set things right again. Symptoms are the body’s way of alerting us to an imbalance, and treating the symptoms only impede the body’s natural healing duties. Skip the Zantac and eat some carrots or an apple instead.

Before you set up a doctor’s appointment and start taking the latest fad acid reflux treatment drug, take some time to consider another approach to regaining optimal health. Not only have the latest heartburn drugs not been tested thoroughly or for a long enough period of time to be deemed completely safe, but there are simpler ways to heal the body.

The first principle I’d like to discuss is that of trust. The body is fully capable of healing itself if given half a chance. When we fill it up with chemicals, dyes and sugar we’re only making it more difficult for it to do its job.

When we trust our bodies to do what is in their nature to do for us, we can let go and focus our energies on other things. The human body is a masterpiece that has been fine tuned for survival over millions and millions of years. All we have to do to keep it in tip tp shape is provide it with a few basic things.

Our bodies needs sleep as well as clean air, water and food. In times of personal health crises, this is no different, with the exception that taking in less food during times of illness can redirect energy to the body’s maintenance work. Digestion uses a lot of energy after all.

If you’re having consistent or frequent bouts of heartburn or acid reflux symptoms, it’s very possible that you have structural abnormalities that encourage the painful or uncomfortable symptoms. However, whether it’s structural, hereditary or due to personal eating habits, there are steps we can take to isolate and alleviate the problem.

Start by cutting the main known triggers of acid reflux from your diet. Chocolate, tomatoes, high-fat, spicy and dairy foods, as well as calcium supplements and Vitamin C are known stimulants of acid reflux.

As you begin to cut these foods out, you may notice lessening of your symptoms. Keep that up until you’re able to isolate the main causes. You may be able to eat these foods earlier in the day and not suffer from the same acid reflux symptoms.

If you don’t have success, try cutting out more processed elements from your diet. Sometimes the body responds to toxin overload with odd symptoms, like heartburn or other random effects. You may find that upping your water intake and cutting out diet sodas does the trick for you. It’s all about experimentation. Good luck.

There are many approaches to acid reflux natural remedies, but the unifying principle of all so-called natural remedies is allowing the body to heal itself. We assist the body’s natural healing abilities by giving it the basic things it requires, including water, sleep and food, the simpler the better.

So, the first and simplest way to deal with acid reflux is to eat clean and natural foods. Eating foods rich in nutrients and low in processed ingredients that only hinder natural bodily processes give the body the best odds at being able to snap back from sickness or discomfort.

Clean water allows our body to remove the waste products that are produced by the processing of food. We eat food to gain energy, but we cannot utilize all components of the food we eat. Adequate water allows the body’s circulator and limbic systems to collect and remove waste from the body’s cells.

Sleep is a critical factor in optimal health. Only during the deepest stages of sleep does the body produce its most effective growth hormones. These wonder drugs are responsible for the miraculous healing and restoration that we take for granted many days of our lives.

Beyond good eating and sleep habits, there are some natural herbal supplements that can help alleviate acid reflux symptoms and even root causes. Just like with pharmaceutical medicines or any drug, keep things simple and try not to mix too many drugs.

For example, simple peppermint has many digestive system supportive traits. It aids the body in digesting food by encouraging the secretion of digestive enzymes. It relieves upset stomach of various kinds and tastes pretty good too. Why do you think restaurants give out peppermint candies on your way out the door?

For more information about specific herbs that are known to help acid reflux, check out one of the many helpful herb encyclopedia websites on the internet.

The esophagus is the tube that food travels along from the mouth to the stomach. There are sphincters at both the top and bottom ends of the esophagus that help guide food to the stomach in a controlled fashion.

When people use the word ‘reflux’ in relation to stomach and digestive issues, they are referring to the reflux of stomach contents. Instead of moving toward the stomach, food and gastric acid move backwards toward the esophagus. This is acid reflux.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease refers more specifically to a failure of the bottom esophageal sphincter to seal off and prevent stomach contents from passing back toward the esophagus. This is the most common type of acid reflux disease.

When stomach acids touch the sensitive lining of the esophagus, patients feel discomfort or pain in the form of a burning sensation. Since the esophagus is not built to withstand stomach acid, it doesn’t take much acid reflux to feel a great deal of discomfort.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux, on the other hand, lies at the other end of the esophasgus. With LPRD the problem lies in both of the esophageal sphincters. While gastric reflux is a painful occurrence, tissues of the areas before / above the esophagus are even more sensitive and vulnerable to acid reflux.

When the upper esophageal sphincter fails to retain stomach acid, this is known as laryngopharyngeal reflux. The throat structures are much more sensitive to the damaging effects of digestive fluids than the esophagus. Lungs, larynx and pharynx are particularly fragile when it comes to caustic stomach acid.

Sufferers of LPRD may not have heartburn-like symptoms. Regular heartburn hurts because esophageal tissue is irritated, but with laryngopharyngeal reflux disease a less nerve-infused portion is the part being affected by acid reflux.

Symptoms include chronic cough, pain in the throat, frequent throat clearing and asthma type symptoms. If you think that you may be suffering from laryngopharyngeal reflux you should of course seek help from a medical professional.

Esophageal reflux is another term for gastroesophageal reflux disease, better known as acid reflux disease. This irritating and sometimes extremely painful condition is caused when gastric contents on the stomach are allowed to entering the esophagus.

Since the lining of the esophagus is not meant to handle the caustic nature of stomach acid, it is quick to respond to the acidic intrusion in the form of symptoms ranging from mild heartburn to extreme burning or even ripping sensations of pain.

There are many foods that have a tendency to trigger esophageal reflux. Chocolate and dairy products are among some of the most common exacerbating elements of acid reflux triggers. Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, onions, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli are also known culprits.

Foods that are very spicy or high in fat can also cause heartburn, though these are more likely to be contributing factors for those who do not normally consume these types of food.

Try reducing the intake of these types of food. Also, many people can eat some of these foods early in the day, but have trouble with increased acid production when they’re eaten closer to bed time.

There are also other factors that may play a part in your esophageal reflux condition, such as hiatus hernia, hypercalcemia or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The later two diseases cause an increased production of gastrin, which leads to increased acidity in the stomach.

With hiatus hernia cases, esophageal reflux is caused or exacerbated by motility and mechanical factors. There are structural abnormalities that allow gastric contents to spill out of the stomach and irritate the esophagus.

Though there are other factors that contribute to esophageal reflux, modifying eating habits can have a positive effect on your struggle with heartburn and even the underlying issues related to acid reflux disease.

Many people have had success alleviating their acid reflux by taking note of what they eat. Over time they begin to notice patterns to their heartburn and the foods that were eaten. Not all people are able to get rid of heartburn once and for all, yet most people realized a significant improvement. The best way to find out if it will work for you is to give it a try.
