Bipolar disorder is a mental health issue in which an individual experiences cycles of depression and mania. It is classified as a mood disorder. It is also referred to as manic depression. If not treated properly, bipolar disorder affects every aspect of an individual’s life including relationships, school, and career. Many individuals who commit suicide showed symptoms of bipolar disorder that were not treated, or they had been diagnosed but stopped taking their medication.

Bipolar depression is the part of the cycle where the person is at a low point. It is also referred to as manic depression. Signs include a low mood that is different from what they usually are, feeling guilty or worthless without a reason why, thoughts of death or dark thoughts, and feeling hopeless. These symptoms of bipolar depression can lead to suicide.

The market is saturated with medications to help with treating bipolar disorder. There is no cure for the mental illness, so daily medication is a source of treatment many individuals have chosen to live with. Lithium is the most popular drug prescribed for bipolar disorder. The medication is to even out your moods and keep them on an even kill. This reduces both cycles of mania and depression. It is an ongoing daily medication. Patients generally start to feel better within 2 weeks, but it may take several months to fully have the mood changes under control.

Bipolar Treatment

Treatments for bipolar disorder include counseling, group therapy, continuing a normal daily routine, education, and medication. There is no cure for bipolar disorder, so it must be treated with a combination of the above to meet the requirements of the individual. The goal is to provide treatment methods that allow a person to function in a manner that is productive and meaningful to them.
