Blindness

Most of us take being able to see for granted as we go through our daily activities. However for some individuals that ability isn’t there for them to enjoy. It is possible for individuals to be born blind or to have it happen later in life. Blindness can occur due to an injury or it can slowly take place over a period of time where they sight gets worse and worse until it is gone. The causes of blindness can be either physical, psychological, or a combination of both.

Braille

Braille is a worldwide program that allows blind people to be able to read and write. There are books, menus, ATM’s, phones, and even watches available today in Braille. All of these items allow blind people to be more independent and to continue doing normal activities the rest of us enjoy. The Braille system is named after the name that developed it, Louis Braille. The system was introduced in 1821.

Legal Blindness

There are many different degrees of blindness that people suffer from. Some have no ability to see at all while others have difficulty that glasses and contacts can’t help with. While they can still see some light and blurred formations they can’t see well enough to read, write, or operate a vehicle.

Night Blindness

Many people who are able to see quite well during the day suffer from an ailment called night blindness. This can seriously affect a person’s ability to enjoy regular activities that take place after dusk. Most people who suffer from night blindness find that driving after this time of evening is simply too dangerous.

Seeing Eye Dogs

Dogs are said to be man’s best friend, and for those who canët see they can provide more than just companionship. Seeing eye dogs are trained to assist them blind so that they can lead a more normal life. Seeing eye dogs are allowed to escort blind people into most public buildings, retail stores, and even to their jobs in some cases.
