Color Blindness and Career
Physical disabilities are easy to identify in the work place but other types of disabilities aren’t common knowledge. One of these disabilities is color blindness. It affects the individual’s ability to successfully distinguish colors from each other. This can lead to some struggles for the individual in the work place.
Professionals need to look the part so dressing well is essential. If you show up at work with clothes that don’t match is can affect your credibility and make others question your ability to perform the duties of the job. Individuals who are color blind have to be very careful with the clothing they purchase. Items that are of colors that they can easily confuse need to be separated well. They can often play it safe by having plenty of neutral colors that will work well together.
Being color blind can hinder some of the professions you will be able to enter. For example it would be quite difficult to be a successful interior decorator if you aren’t able to distinguish colors from each other. Advertising and marketing may also prove to be a struggle because the colors on the layouts are often what attracts or distracts potential consumers.
Reading information on a computer screen can be difficult if you are color blind. These days operating a computer is an essential part of almost any career. There is special software employers can provide so that it is easier to read the information. If the employer can’t afford the software it can often be donated by an agency that serves those with such disabilities.
It is important to tell your employer that you are color blind so they can make reasonable accommodations for you. Failure to tell them can cause them to think you are incompetent so you will get bad reviews, passed up for promotions, or fired. Under the American Disability Act it is illegal for any company to refuse to hire you based on the information that you are color blind.
Being color blind can be very frustrating because it affects both your personal life and your career. Most people spend the majority of their life employed so make sure you get all the assistance you need with making the work place comfortable for you to work in. While some of your career choices may be limited you can still find an area that is of interest to you.
