Childproofing Tips

You know you need to child proof your home. However, you may not know where to start. There are so many things to remember and to do, you are worried that you will forget something. That is why you could use some childproofing tips. In general, there are a few basic things to remember that will make your home more child proof. Children are curious and unfortunately this is exactly the kind of thing that can get them into trouble. They don’t have the life skills needed to make discerning choices. That is one of the reasons why children can have so many accidents.

The first thing you should do is make sure that anything that has chemicals in it are either out of a child’s reach or in a locked cabinet or locked room. Things such as paint and paint thinner, cleaning supplies, medication, and other harmful substances should be kept out of the way. One of the things children do to learn how to understand their environment is put things in their mouths. What’s worse is that a lot of cleaning products, for example, are in bright colors that may remind them of fruit juice. Hide these items and make sure you keep the number to the poison control center handy.

Another thing you need to do is cover any electrical outlets that are not being used. It is fairly easy for a curious child to end up getting electrocuted. The prongs in the outlets are just perfect to fit things such as butter knives and screw drivers. These can easily electrocute a child. For extra safety, cut off the power to any outlets that aren’t being used, as long as they have their own circuit. You can purchase outlet coverings that will also keep the outlets hidden.

One other important thing to do is block off any stairways. Curious yet clumsy children could easily end up falling down the steps. This could result in a serious or fatal injury. Also remember to keep sharp objects such as knives and scissors out of reach. You may also want to put these items under lock and key. These can also inflict harm. And this may seem obvious, but if you have guns in the house you should also keep those out of the reach of children.
