A bench grinder is a tool that most woodworkers have in their shop. This tool is used to sharpen other tools. It’s certainly a handy thing to have around as it can sharpen tools and blades of all kinds to perfect precision. Before using this tool, it is important to understand bench grinder safety. Many of the rules to follow are common sense rules that should be observed no matter what tool you’re using.
Make sure your shop is well-lit and clean. Remove any clutter and clean up any spills to prevent slips and falls. Wear appropriate clothing that is form fitting as loose clothing can get hung in a machine. Gloves are a necessity when it comes to handling wood but shouldn’t be used near running machinery as they can get snagged, which can lead to serious injury. Under no circumstances should you wear jewelry like necklaces or bracelets in the wood shop. If you happen to have long hair, it should be pinned back so that it does not dangle. Even a ponytail is dangerous if it is long enough. Safety goggles are an absolute must when using any kind of tool, including a bench grinder.
Before using a bench grinder, make sure the pedestal and grinder are fastened securely. Secure all guards and confirm they are in the right place before plugging up the machine. Tool rests should be within 1/8 inch of the wheels and should only be adjusted when the machine is unplugged. The height of the work rest should be on the horizontal center machine spindle line. You should always maintain a 1/4 wheel exposure with a tongue or movable guard. These simple guidelines can help you operate your grinder safely and efficiently.
Bench grinder safety also has a lot to do with how you use the machine. Stand to the side until the grinder wheel reaches top speed. When sharpening, bring the tool in contact with the grinder using smooth, slow, fluid motions. Gradual pressure should be favored over sudden pressure, and you should only apply the minimum amount of pressure for the work you’re doing. To keep wheels operating properly dress them lightly on a regular basis. When wheels become worn, replace them. Always inspect wheels for wear before plugging up your grinder. This will help keep you safe and keep your grinder in good working order.
