Most people can name the three largest cities in the United States after thinking for about two and a half seconds. You probably just did it as you were reading that sentence. Automatically, in your head, you rattled off, ‘New York, Los Angeles, Chicago,’ before you even got to the period. But can you name large city number 4? It’s not Boston, Philadelphia or Miami. After the demise of the United States’ steel industry, the city of Pittsburgh was forced to drastically alter its economic structure to survive. It has done so admirable, shifting into fields like healthcare and technology, especially robotics. Pittsburgh continues to grow in these and other sectors, even while the population continues a steady decline. This growth, combined with a low cost of living, make Pittsburgh an eminently livable city. So much so, in fact, that it has been among the top 20 in this category for over two decades and even earned the top ranking on the recent 2007 list.

Located in southwestern British Columbia, the port city of Vancouver is consistently rated among the world’s most livable cities.
