The idea is that if you get some experience on the local level and make a name for yourself, you will eventually get the opportunity to go on a more national level.
To become a film editor you first need to somehow get educated. For many, this means going to a school and studying film editing. This is probably your best bet, especially if you go to a school that has a good reputation. You can not only gain valuable experience but also end up meeting some people and develop important contacts. It is not uncommon for a student to graduate and end up with a good job from one of these programs. There is also the possibility of being an intern and making contacts that way.
When most of us watch the movies, we do not think about things like film editors. But they are a vital part of the process. Without them we would not have the chance to watch the movie as we know it. This means that no matter what we watch, there was a film editor who got it to that point. They are responsible for going through the film and editing it into something that really shines.
