Maids

Black women, entered into slavery, had no choice but to provide domestic services for others. They often were made to work in the fields and in the home. The days were long and hard for such women. In addition, many of these black women were sexually abused by their owners. It is important to remember that these maids did not receive any compensation for their work. They were brutally beaten if the work was not up to the owners requirements. They were often poorly feed, sleep in horrible conditions, and worked to the point of physical exhaustion.

Free white women have often sought employment as maids and cooks. This was an easy way for many who had no skills than domestic chores to earn money. For some women in early era’s who had been deserted or widowed, being a maid offered them a chance of survival for themselves and their children.

In today’s busy society, most upper class homes have maids to take care of the home needs. Many middle class families pay for cleaning services a few times a week due to time restraints. Some use individuals while others use maid services. This practice has become very popular in single parent families as well as families with both parents working. The goal is to spend free time doing leisure activities or additional career work rather than domestic chores. Maids are no longer a fixture in most homes, but a separate business entity providing services to those demanding it.

Providing maid services can be a very profitable business. If you can establish you are reliable and honest, you can build a regular clientele. For others, you may provide them extra help to get ready for a special occasion or to clean up after the holidays. It is an excellent source of income and employment for those who want to make their own schedule, only work while their children are at school, or enjoy working alone. While most of us don’t enjoy the chore of cleaning, there are those out there who do rather enjoy doing just that.

If you are considering hiring a maid, make a detailed list of what you are wanting done as well as how often you want the work done. The do some research to find individuals or companies in your area offering such services. Individuals often work for a lower rate of pay, but companies are often bonded. That protects you against theft. Regardless of which you choose, take the time to get background information on the individual and the business.
