When you hear the phrase, ‘I love toy trains,’ most of the time you wouldn’t think of a store dedicated solely to toy trains. But that’s exactly what that phrase means in New Buffalo, Michigan. New Buffalo serves as home to the infamous I Love Toy Trains, a toy train wonderland that is every child and toy train collector’s dream. The store carries Thomas and Friends wooden toy trains and accessories and several unique items from Lionel Corporation.

If the name of the store sounds familiar to you, it’s because it was derived from the popular children’s video series. The series, ‘I Love Toy Trains’ is an animated show that allows children to use their imagination in the world of toy trains. And that’s exactly the concept the store used in finding a name for their establishment - a place where children and adults can go and just let their imagination run free among the hundreds of toy trains and items for sale.

I Love Toy Trains is settled in a 1930’s style home on the bottom floor. You’ll find an assortment of classic, antique, and new toy trains all together under one roof. Several models of common names in the toy train industry are available at the store. For example, you’ll see some beautiful Standard gauge models from the twenties on display, and several manufactures featured include Lionel, Marx, and Williams. You can find classic and simple wooden toy trains ideal for toddlers and small children, and you’ll also find toy trains complete with operating engines and hand-painted detail for those looking to ‘kick it up a notch.’

Not only will you find everything you need to create a toy train wonderland, but you’ll also find rare and unique toys imported from Germany and Czechoslovakia. Where else can you find a duck on a bike, tumbling bunnies, or singing cowboys? I Love Toy Trains also carries several styles of railroad tracks along with accessories to make your toy train system as realistic as possible. The store carries a wide variety of trinkets ranging in price, so even if you are on a budget you are very likely to find a keepsake at a reasonable price.

I Love Toy Trains is only open three days a week, Friday through Sunday, from 11:00am to 5:00pm EST. If you’re ever visiting this area in Michigan, make it part of your trip to visit I Love Toy Trains.

In addition to the trains, there is a delightful selection of clockwork, tin-litho toys imported from Czechoslovakia and Germany - Duck on a Bike, Space Man Robot, Elephant Balancing Ball, Panda Drummer, Rocking Cowboy, Basketball Girl, and Tumbling Bunnies.

Your family has been straining their brains, trying to come up with a hobby that all of you can enjoy. Something that will bring you closer. After some debate and allot of bad ideas you and the rest of your family decide that setting up a toy train would be also of fun.

The first thing you need to do is go to your local bookstore or library and pick up a couple of books about toy trains. Maybe locate an informational DVD that your whole family can watch together. The more knowledge you and your family the better idea you all will have about what you want. If you are interested in recreating a real railroad pick up a couple of books both the railroad and the area of the world where it is located.

Take a Saturday afternoon, pile your family in the mini-van, and go visit your local hobby shop. Chances are good that they will carry some toy train material. Several hobby shops even offer classes for beginners.

Plan to attend a toy train show or exhibit. You’ll be able to see how experienced toy train collectors have designed their layouts. You’ll start to have some ideas of your own. The exhibitors will be able to help answer any questions you have.

Start looking over your house. Decide where you want to start setting up your toy train. As inviting as it might seem, avoid setting it on the floor. Toy trains that are set up on the floor are easy to step on or kick. In addition dangerous feet, toy trains that are dept on the floor are prone to carpet fuzz which gums up their mechanisms. The best plan is to get a large table that you can set arrange your toy train. If you like you can start to create an ambiance to enhance your planned layout. Add some special lighting, really scrub the walls, and install some shelves to display your toy train supplies that you aren’t using in your layout.

Purchase a tool kit. Don’t worry about getting anything elaborate. All you will need in the beginning is a pair of needle nose pliers, a hobby knife, a screwdriver, needle files, a scale rule, and a pair of pliers. Keep the tool kit in a drawer near the place you plan on displaying your toy train.

Don’t become enthralled with the idea of having a huge layout. Large layouts are very complicated and can quickly intimidate a beginner. The best plan is to buy a small layout. The wonderful thing about toy train sets is that they are designed to be expanded. When you start setting up your layout follow that publishers plans. Once you are comfortable with the project you can start to customize.

Now that you are set up, its time to add a train.

On form of power you can use for your toy train is a power pack. A power pack is an electrical device that supplies the power to a toy train. The power pack controls the direction of the train as well as the speed at which the train travels. Another power source is the use of a remote control. A train that operates with a remote control requires you to operate the remote, you control the speed and direction of the train. An electric train that operates with a power pack lets you relax while the train quietly runs along its track.

While you and your family are enjoying your new electric toy train, shut of the TV and make sure that the entire family is involved in the planning, creating, and enjoying of the latest hobby.

Not only do electric toy trains provide allot of fun for the entire family, they have a history that is almost as rich as the one shared by the real railroads.

The very first toy trains first appeared on the market in the 1860’s. These trains were simple designs that were made out of wood and metal. It is doubtful that the designers had any inkling of what there simple floor toys would evolve into.

The Marklin company saw a need for a set of standard gauges for toy trains in 1891. When they first implemented these standard gauges it was for the wind-up (also called clockwork) trains the Marklin Company produced. The same standards are still used for today’s electric trains.

The very first electric toy train was introduced to the world in 1901. The train was a product of the Lionel toy company. At first this train was only intended to be used as a window display. It wasn’t long before consumers were more interested in the window display then in the the merchandise.

It was during the 1920’s that electric toy trains became really popular. At the time all the kids wanted them, but only the rich kids could afford them.

Smaller scaled eclectic toy trains were introduced to the world. These trains were typically O gauge and HO gauge. Most of these trains could only be purchased as kits that were then put together by adults with a great deal of experience.

World War II stopped the production of toy eclectic trains from 1941 through 1945.

When production of toy electric trains resumed after the war, the popularity of the trains took off. By the 1950’s they were the most popular toy among boys in the United States. They had also become more affordable. At this time the biggest toy train manufacturer is Lionel. By the middle of the 1950’s there was a clear division between toy electric trains that were designed by adults and toy eclectic trains that were designed with children in mind.

The N scale train was introduced in 1965. The N scale train was only one half the size of the O trains. Three years later the G scale train was introduced. The G scale train is still a popular choice among garden railroaders. The G scale train was introduced by Germany’s LGB company. The G scale trains allow collectors to add real scenery to their layouts as well as topography. Some people incorporate garden trains directly into their homes landscaping.

Marklin created a train that was even smaller then the N scale train in the 1970’s. This train was called the Z scale. At this time improvements in technology and electronics could be seen in the toy electric trains.

Realistic sounds and digital control systems were added to the electric toy trains in the 1980’s. It is estimated that there are over a half million train collectors in the United States and Canada.

Sports memorabilia stores are not very hard to find. In just about every shopping center or shopping strip you will find some sports memorabilia stores. They may very in size, quality and quantity of merchandise but they are there. Some of these specialty shops sell merchandise that represents only one entity.

For an example it may be a store owned and operated by the local college or university in the area. This is especially true if it is a big college with a nationally known reputation for having a quality athletic program. In these stores only merchandise representing that college and other sports memorabilia are found in the inventory. Sometimes the specialty stores represent a particular athletic conference. If this is the case then all the schools in that conference will have sports memorabilia on display and for sale. You will be able to buy a shirt with the athlete’s number on the back in school’s colors and even some times the athlete’s name written on the shirt.

These stores do very well when some one of these teams wins a national championship or even if it is just the conference championship. Such stores are scattered throughout the conference area so that small communities will have an opportunity to buy their favorite sports item. In addition you will find in some of the larger malls other sports memorabilia stores that sell a variety of merchandise. Sometimes there is a lot of merchandise representing just about every sport that is of primary interest to the local community. You will see merchandise representing NBA stars, national football stars, the national baseball league, and an abundance of stock car paraphernalia will be in the inventory also. What ever the hot sellers are these stores are sure to be the first to receive merchandise.

You would be remiss to overlook large department stores with a sporting goods section. These stores carry most of the popular items that the general public would look for in addition to the mall there are freestanding sports memorabilia stores in some of the larger cities owned and operated by some of the sports heroes themselves. Don’t forget your local flea markets that will have and sell baseball cards, racing cards and all kinds of sports cards, flags, blankets and other sports memorabilia. Almost any shopping area that caters to the general public will have on display some bits and pieces of sports memorabilia to sell. It is safe to say that you will find sports memorabilia stores scattered around in every shopping area where there is a likable traffic. Even hotels and resort areas some times have spaces provided for retail shopping. Let us remember that some of our sports heroes owned properties that will promote the sale of sports memorabilia. If these hotels are in a sports minded community more than likely there will be a few sports memorabilia stores either located in the hotel complex or very close by.

Even some of the welcome centers have retail outlets in them. After all states tried to generate as much cash as possible. What better way to generate this cash than to have sports memorabilia stores in the centers?

For those of us that go beyond thinking about skydiving, the thought has probably crossed your mind at least once (especially if this is your first skydive) that you would rather skydiving with someone. No, that doesn’t mean someone else jumps before or after you, but you’d like to be attached to someone. Preferably, someone who knows what they’re doing and has lots of experience with skydiving. That’s exactly why tandem skydiving was created!

Tandem skydiving is a technical term for a student skydiver who jumps with an experienced instructor. The instructor handles every aspect of the jump, from exiting the aircraft, handling and guiding the parachute, and landing. The student does not need extensive instruction and training in order to complete tandem skydiving. Sometimes the student will be instructed in parachute deployment, but the instructor remains in control throughout the entire flight and ensures there are no safety issues.

The equipment used for tandem skydiving differs slightly from the equipments used in single skydives. First of all, the parachutes are very different. Tandem jumpers use a drogue parachute. This parachute, when deployed, slows down the speed of the two jumpers to that of a single jumper. Tandem skydivers also use larger parachutes of at least 400 square feet, which help support the weight of two jumpers as opposed to one. Each parachute and equipment piece are put together in a tandem ’system,’ which each instructor must become certified in prior to performing a tandem jump.

Rest assured that your instructor is knowledgeable and can handle any emergency situation. The FAA requires that tandem instructors have at least 500 single jumps and over three years of skydiving experience before they can qualify to be a tandem instructor. Tandem instructors will provide you with everything you need to know prior to making the jump. In about half an hour, they will go over deploying the parachute, hand signals, and let you know about landing techniques. While it almost seems too easy and you may even think you haven’t had enough training, that is really all it takes to complete a successful tandem jump. For the most part, the instructors do all of the work for you.

Be advised that while you are jumping with an expert, it still does not release you from the health requirements of a single jump. You can be expected to be held to the same standards, and you will still have to obtain medical permission in order to complete a tandem jump. The facility is also not responsible for any emergencies or injuries, even if it is a direct result of the instructor. You will have to sign a waiver and release form, which states that in the event of an emergency you or your family members do not have the right to sue or take any legal action. Then again, you can expect to sign one of these at any skydive facility, tandem or single. Keep in mind that your instructor has had extensive training and the event of an emergency is nearly impossible.

Like any piece of al fresco sports’ wear, snowboarding pants serves one main purpose and that is to ensure your protection from injury, weather conditions, and any other external force. There is generally an accepted method to maintain your core temperature and prevent you from cooling off easily and this is known as the Three Layer System. This system is composed of a base layer, an insulation layer and an outer shell. The base layer is the only layer directly in contact with your skin and its sole purpose is to turn the moisture away from the skin. On top of the base layer lies the insulation layer which is also intended to get rid of moisture away from the body but its more important function is to insulate your body by confining your body heat. The outer shell is the layer directly exposed to the environment. It is expected to be waterproof, windproof and has also a breathable outlet for moisture.

Most snowboarding pants combine 2 or contain all the 3 layers in one piece. Most will also have waterproofing, a thin outer shell, and an efficient insulation layer.. During warmer conditions, you have the option to wear only the snowboarding pants. Meanwhile, when the weather turns colder, you can add a base layer bottom beneath your snowboarding pants. However, when the weather goes extremely cold, have the liberty to wear all three layers while wearing a layer of extra insulation between the base layer of your bottoms and your snowboarding pants.

Before buying your snowboarding pants, consider these tips.

-Never make the mistake of wearing normal pants for snowboarding. You really need to buy your snowboarding pants especially if you are just a beginner. Remember that if you are a neophyte, you are most likely to be the one stumbling most of the time on your knees or on your behind. Hence, if you happen to be wearing casual jeans then the ice will melt every time you fall on the snow and you will eventually get soaked and cold. This is not a good way to learn.

-Although you can use ski pants as an alternative when you don’t have a snowboarding pants yet, it will not allow you to do the movements that you can normally do using a snowboard pants. Unlike the snowboard pants, ski pants are not intended for tricks like aerial spins or jumps. So unless you only want to do what a skier does, stick to the ski pants. So when you’re buying a snowboard pants, look for one that does not pinch in the crotch area or one that has enough room for you to do your tricks.

-You need to anticipate a few rough falls. So, one important aspect that you need to look for snowboarding pants is extra padding especially on the knee and buttocks area since these are the parts that commonly catch your plunges. Having extra padding will not give you enough protection to minimize the chance of any injury plus the possibility of getting your pants damaged thus losing their waterproof capacity.

-Go for quality and not for the price. You want enough protection and durability. Don’t go for cheap pants that will be ripped off after a day of practice. If you want to be a pro, get yourself the right snowboarding pants that will last you until you become one.

-Choose function over fashion. Although it’s good to be noticed for your cool clothes, it’s a lot better to be to be wearing something that gives you adequate protection and provides you with great comfort.

In 1936,When he was diagnosed with Tuberculosis, the doctors instructed Marshall H. Larrabee to start taking things easy. Marshall Larrabee’s response was to create Skaneateles Handicrafters. Skaneateles Handicrafters was a company that later became famous for creating wooden toy trains. Skaneateles Handicrafters was based out of Skaneateles New York.

A system of small trains that run on a wooden track are called wooden toy trains. Toy trains and their wooden tracks are over seventy years old. Collectors of old wooden trains know that the trains, cars use to hook together with the aid of small metal hooks, that has since changed. Now manufactures prefer to link the toy trains, cars with magnets, the magnets make them safer for young children who have a tendency to pop the wooden cars into their mouths. Another change toy train manufacturers have made to their wooden train sets is to make some of the parts, like wheels, out of plastic. The large non-mobile pieces, including the layout scenery, are generally crafted from wood.

The design of toy trains made from wood is very simple. Once you are past the basic structure the design can be simple or complex. The locomotive and toy trains, wooden cars are made out of carved pieces of wood. The wheels are attached. A few extra pieces of wood are attached to the carving of the locomotive in order to distinguish it from the other cars.

The ends of each piece of the track look like the edges of jigsaw puzzle pieces. Most toy train companies who make wooden train tracks conform to the Vario-System. By sticking to this system wooden train tracks made by one company will easily connect to a piece of track made by another company. Most people refer to the Vario-system as the Brio-compatible, after the Biro company who was the most famous wooden train manufacture in the world. Interestingly enough, T.C. Timber, a company that use to be called Skaneateles Handicrafters is one of the few companies who didn’t conform to the Vario-system,

A rolling stock track is a toy train track that has wooden grooves that guide the trains wheels. Most companies make the their train tracks so each individual piece is reversible, this allows the toy train’s owner to reverse the tracks curves.

The landscaping that compliments the toy train wooden sets are typically made out plaster, plastic, and plastic resin. Landscapes featuring, deserts, the Pacific Coast, mountain ranges, and many more are available.

The worlds most famous wooden train is Thomas. Thomas the Tank Engine was a character in a series of children’s books called The Railway Series that first appeared in the United Kingdom in 1945. In 1984 Thomas made his acting debut on a TV program called Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. The show first aired in the United States in 1989. The popularity of Thomas the Tank was large enough that manufactures started selling patterned sets, for toy train’s wooden layouts.

Auction sports memorabilia can generate plenty of good sales when the right bidders are in place. First of all it is a great way for you to generate funds for just about any cause you can think. Attending auctions for many is a very pleasant pastime. For many organizations it is their only means for fund raising. It is not uncommon for civic organizations in large and small communities to sponsor various groups in the community that sell auction sports memorabilia. Some of these organizations work towards this common goal all year long because it is their major fund raiser for the year.

In some of the larger communities there are established auction houses that sell auction sports memorabilia as a day to day retail activity. There are many charity organizations that will work in conjunction with communitywide projects that offer auction sports memorabilia. Many people who are in high income tax brackets use this venue as a tax write-off for the year. When this is the goal for the donation you need documentation as to the authentic value of the item. It is not good enough for you to just write an estimation of its value. You need documented proof in the event that your taxes are audited. Amid the video footage on the nightly news in the magazine headlines and the checkout aisle of the grocery chain there are enough heroes to go around.

If you have a favorite sports hero more than likely you keep up with the stats and daily happenings surrounding your hero. So when you go to an auction and find an auction sports memorabilia it is sometimes a greater find than you anticipated. And it may be a much better price than any other place. On the other hand if you are the seller you may generate more for your auction sports memorabilia then you would have selling directly. A large number of collectors who have items to sell choose to sell online with eBay and other Internet auction sites. This is a great way to connect you to the whole world wide world in your bid for the highest price possible. Auctions are especially popular in the spring and summer months. This is due to the fact that many auctions are held outdoors and can be cheaply done without a great deal of overhead expenses. The size of the facility where the auction is to be held dependents upon what kind of auction and the clientele it is expected to draw. Auction sports memorabilia sometimes draw high prices and sometimes not.

The price is determined by many variables such as how many bidders want the same item, the demand and supply, the age, and the sport. Needless to say the sports hero is also a major factor in the bidding. Some sports heroes draw more than others. But don’t count it all lost because sometimes you may get a steal because your competitors are not present at the time. The gamble pays off some times at live auctions. Eventually it all boils down to who is bidding and when. Auction sports memorabilia more than likely will be a good deal.

With the winter season fast closing in on us, it’s time to start getting ready to hit the slopes. Burton Snowboarding Gear is one of the best companies to come up with snowboarding equipment that keeps the fun-loving ones in mind. Where other snowboard manufacturing companies tend to focus on professional level gear that’s patterned after ‘the equipment used by professionals’ or some other similar sales pitch, Burton’s focus is on the rest of us who just want to snowboard for fun, have a good time, and stay warm and comfortable while doing it.

Burton’s lineup involves not only snowboards, but apparel and accessories that focus on stylish appearance, safe performance, and user comfort. While they also have their own line of competition level gear, a vast majority of their equipment is meant for casual enjoyment and usage. Here are some samples of their offerings.

Kiddie and Beginner Snowboards - these snowboards are designed like bikes with trainer wheels, in that their balance and shape are very forgiving on the slopes. Performance wise, don’t expect to pull stunts with these boards, but if you don’t know much about snowboarding, you can expect that you’ll be eating the snow a lot less than you would with a normal board.

Intermediate to Advanced Snowboards - these are top quality snowboards designed for speed and agility. If you actually know what you’re doing and want to hit the slopes with a board that will let you strut your stuff, these are good purchases. Just make sure that you really DO know your stuff, as these boards can turn pretty quick, and it you’re not quite as agile as you think you are, you might wind up making a pretty good snowman on the slopes.

Kid’s Apparel - snowboarding is for everyone, even little kids, and Burton’s lineup takes into account high factors of both warmth and safety in their children’s clothing. Warm multi-layered socks, flashy jackets that make it easy to spot your kids on the slope, and heat-retaining pants are just some of the offerings. There are even additional lines for girls, featuring fleece jackets and beanies. These are meant as much to look good as they are to keep their wearers safe and warm.

Adult Apparel - these are full sized regular adult snow gear that affords warmth and protection. However, Burton’s winter gear lineup for adults also offers a greater degree of freedom of movement than some other winter gear manufacturers. While still warms and comfy, these jackets, boots, and pants are built light and sturdy to allow for quick and easy motions.

Gear Bags - Burton’s lineup of winter gear bags are made to mold to a snowboarder’s back during a run. Compact, light, and built with shallow profiles that cut on wind resistance, these bags can be taken on a board with no worries about their weight and balance throwing you off at a crucial moment. Even the arrangement of the straps has been taken into consideration, as they are designed to avoid binding up a person’s arms and shoulders when snowboarding.

Belt Pouches - Burton also has a lineup of belt pouches that hold small odds and ends if you don’t want to hassle with a full backpack on a snowboarding run. Some of these belt pouches are even specialized, like ones meant to hold the average portable CD player so you can listen to your favorite sounds while you’re on the slopes.

So what exactly is a tandem skydive? Simply put, it means that you (the student) perform a skydive jump while attached to a tandem instructor. The instructor handles every single aspect of the jump, from training, to exiting the aircraft, to deploying the parachute, to landing. While you will be trained in jumping techniques and how to land, the instructor handles everything for you. This method of skydiving is ideal for someone who has no experience with skydiving or is scared of heights. The training required to complete a tandem jump is minimal, and is an excellent way to ease your fears of skydiving.

Ohio is famous as being one of the best skydiving states with the most facilities. One of the best tandem skydive locations is found in Columbus, Ohio. Skydive Columbus Ohio provides students with one-on-one instruction on tandem skydiving, and goes over every little detail of the jump. You will learn how to manage your equipment, how to pull the ripcord, and hand signals used between you and the instructor during your free-fall. You will go through an extensive safety course and you will only board the aircraft when you are confident that you understand the entire process.

Skydive Columbus does not perform tandem jumps year-round. Because of the weather changes in that area of the United States, the jumps are contingent on the weather and if the runway is dry enough to safely perform a jump. As you can imagine, attempting a skydive from a wet runway could be disastrous. Before planning a trip to this facility, it is recommended that you call in advance and obtain a current weather schedule. And while the actual jump equipment is provided for you, it is a good idea to speak with someone at the facility to ensure there is nothing extra you need to bring depending on the weather.

As with other skydive facilities, Skydive Columbus has its own rate schedule that can be viewed online or by calling for information. For a complete tandem jump which includes training and all equipment, you are looking at $219 for a single person. You can choose to purchase a video of your tandem skydive for an extra $95. Unfortunately, Skydive Columbus does not offer any group discounts, but they do offer specific group rates. If you feel comfortable with tandem skydiving, the facility offers the chance to jump as individual (known as an accelerated free-fall) after three tandem jumps for $150. The facility offers various jumps and lessons in order to obtain your skydiving license, but you should call in advance with those questions and to obtain the rates.

Skydive Columbus offers a safe facility and environment for those wishing to experience the thrill of tandem skydiving. With top-notch instructors and detailed training, you are to sure to experience a safe jump and make memories that will last a lifetime.
