Read Your Manual

One of the easiest ways to get the most out of your sewing machine as well as avoid common problems is to read the sewing machine manual whenever you get a new machine. Keep your sewing machine manual handy for reference. Practice new stitches and techniques. Carefully read and follow the instructions in the section on care and maintenance.

Choosing a Dealership

A good dealer will teach you how the machine works and be there to service the machine when you have problems. Shop around and find a reputable dealer to help you choose the right machine for your needs. Find out if the retailer can get parts and accessories for your machine that you may need in the future.

Oil Your Machine

Nearly all sewing machines need to be oiled from time to time. This should be done after every eight or so hours of sewing time. Only use oil specifically manufactured for sewing machines. Check your machine manual or with your sewing machine dealer for instructions on how to oil your particular sewing machine.

Sewing Machine Height

If your machine sets on top of a table, the table height needs to be lower than if you have a sewing machine cabinet with a recessed area that the machine sets in. The bed of your machine should be 25-29 inches high. The depth of the sewing table should be at least 20 inches.

Quality Thread

Using good quality thread is better for your sewing machine functioning. Inexpensive thread tends to fray and produce more lint that ends up inside the sewing machine.

Annual Servicing

Even if you sew very little, you should have it serviced at least once every two years because the oil dries out and gets gummy. Though most manufacturers suggest having only trained technicians service the inside portions of sewing machines, as long as you’re careful there really isn’t any reason why you can’t clean these areas yourself.

Used Machines

Used machines can be a good option if you are on a limited budget. Many sewing machine dealers take trade-ins and have a selection of used machines. When purchasing a used machine, make sure it has been serviced and tested by a qualified technician. Also, be sure that your used machine comes with an instruction manual.

Sewing doesn’t have to be a painful task. With a little bit of guidance even the most unskilled sewer can learn to darn socks, hem pants, sew on a button and those kinds of sewing basics. Having these basic sewing skills at hand can really help out around the house. Instead of pestering friends or relatives you’ll be able to pull off all these basic sewing tasks for everyone in your family.

The following is a description of some basic sewing techniques and tips:

Invisible Hand Hem

Press the hem in place and roll back the edge of the hem about one quarter inch. Use horizontal stitches working from left to right. Then use a small stitch to move ahead about one-third inch and use a small stitch in the hem fabric. Continue this process until the hem is complete. Take care not to pull too tightly and you’ll do fine.

Pattern Notches

These are small triangle portions of fabric along the outer edge of the pattern cut line that are for matching pieces. You should remember to cut around the notches. If there is only one notch cut around the outside edge of he entire set, not each individual triangle.

Making Patches

Save some money by making your own patches. You can create a softer and fusible patch with fusible webbing and a lining material. Then you have a large patch from which you can cut the exact sizes and shapes as you need patches.

Buttonholes

It’s a good idea to mark buttonhole placement well. This insures that they are evenly spaced and straight. It can also help to read the directions in your sewing machine manual for buttonhole instructions. Practice using the same number of layers of fabric. It’s a wise choice not to cut any open until all are sewn so you are sure of proper placement.

If you’re looking for a top notch sewing machine then Singer may be the best way to go. With a long history including more than 150 years of producing top of the line sewing machines, Singer sewing machines com recommended by many professionals and people in the know as being one of the best dewing machines you can buy.

If you visit the Singer sewing machines website you can view several different helpful sections to find information about choosing a new sewing machine, a fun sewing project to take on, read about the Singer Company’s colorful history of sewing machine innovation, or find customer support for your sewing machine issue.

There is even a handy store locator that will help you find the nearest Singer retail location where you can purchase a new or used Singer sewing machine. Since these machines are notorious for being durable, purchasing a used Singer sewing machine is not a bad idea at all.

Though some Singer outlets deal with used sewing machines in addition to factory new ones, you may have better luck finding a nice used Singer sewing machine online at one of the popular auction websites, such as Yahoo auctions or EBay.

The customer support section of the Singer website is nicely structured and quite full of useful information. You can read about commonly asked questions and answers, read specific sewing machine instructions for the machine you own, complete product registration forms for your machine and check on serial numbers of sewing machines manufactured

You can contact customer service via email at http://www.singerco.com/company/contact_us.html for any questions not answered on the site. You can also find out about warranty centers in the U.S. and Canada, to which you can bring your warranty issues and machines that need repair.

Industrial sewing machines are much more durable and sturdy than typical retail sewing machines meant for home use. For instance, if you regularly sew or have an alterations shop you most certainly want to opt for an industrial sewing machine. This way you won’t be replacing parts or needing repair service as often.

So just where is the best place to purchase industrial sewing machines? The internet is a valuable resource when it come to locating the best sources of industrial sewing machines. Whether you want to buy directly from the manufacturer or are open to finding deals on new or used machines from other suppliers, the internet is the place to go.

While industrial sewing machines are much hardier and stable than the typical home sewing machine, they command a proportionately higher price too. For this reason, it may best suit your needs to buy a nice used industrial sewing machine.

If you perform a search of the internet for industrial sewing machines you’ll quickly be rewarded with a list of some decent retail sites or collections of links to good sites that sell industrial sewing equipment. At these types of sites you can typically find much more than just sewing machines. You can also find everything from fabric trimmers to cutting tables, industrial sewing machine rentals and more.

If you’re looking for a great deal and want to find the lowest price possible you may very well find just what you’re looking for at one of the popular online auction house websites, such as eBay. Just go to http://ebay.com and type in industrial sewing machines, or click here: http://search.ebay.com/industrial-sewing-machines_W0QQfromZR40QQpqryZindsutrialQ20sewingQ20machines.

You’ll quickly see that there are a number of relevant auctions running at any given moment in time. Just now when I checked there are more than 300 ‘industrial sewing machine’ auctions running, with several ending in only a few minutes. Now many top manufacturers sell machines on eBay, but so do business owners and individuals who wish to sell used machines.

If you’re prepared to do a little homework on the net and /or on an auction site like eBay you’re going to be able to save a ton of money and get a sewing machine that you’ll be very happy with for years and years to come.

I wondered where the people that are currently using Google to search for sewing cabinets live. So, I used a new Google tool called Google Trends to find out.

It is reported on the Google Trends search result for sewing cabinets that people in Seattle, Washington search for this most. The second city was Dallas, Texas. I actually can’t think of two more different places.

The third city in my Google Trends search ranking city locations of people looking for sewing cabinets was San Francisco, California. The fourth city on the list was Atlanta, Georgia.

Seven of the nine results for my sewing cabinets Google Trends search were United States cities. The two cities that were not in the United States were London and Sydney. Changing the view of the Google Trends search results for sewing cabinets from cities to regions showed the United States as a clear winner.

On the Google Trends search result page, there is a place for current news stories about the search term. There were no news stories for a search of sewing cabinets.

The Yahoo Shopping website has 710 results appear when you search for sewing cabinets. They have sponsored results at the top of the page that include Jo Ann and SewingTableShop.com.

The companies that have results in my Yahoo Shopping sewing cabinets search include Sears and West Furnishings and are sorted by something called Top Results. I selected the option to sort the results by price and the cheapest item appeared at the top of the page by default.

The top result when sorted by price was for a sewing machine pull for treadle sewing cabinets. The most expensive result was for a canopy bed. I really don’t understand that result.

Koala seems to be a huge name in sewing cabinets. I’ve never heard of Koala sewing cabinets before and visited their website. They are apparently really nice sewing cabinets made in Australia. There is no mention of what makes them so special.

I did a Google search for sewing classes in Dallas and I had difficulty actually finding a sewing class. I found a sponsored link for an adult casual learning outfit in Dallas, but when I visited their website and did a search for sewing classes, none were offered.

The next link that I followed for sewing classes in Dallas actually led me to a review of sewing classes at Texas Women’s University in Denton. The website was PatternReview.com and I read the review of a sewing expo that one of the members attended.

I decided to go to the main page for PatternReview.com and found a link to sewing classes. What I found there was online sewing classes. The classes are a combination of PDF downloads and interactive real-time chat sessions with the instructors.

There were six online sewing classes offered. Darting below the Beltline is the class offered by Jean Haas that has a course fee of $55. The instructor says that sewers of all skill levels will benefit from this class.

Another one of the online sewing classes listed is taught by Kenneth D. King. He is teaching Soft Handbag Construction with a course fee of $49. He says in the course description that a materials list will be provided after registration.

Understanding Interfacings is the most expensive of the online sewing classes listed on PatternReview.com. The cost of the course is $133. There is a note on the course description that the class concentrates on interfacings for garment sewing and that it does not cover craft and home decor products or battings.

Sarah Veblen is teaching online sewing classes for PatternReview.com. Her current class is The Technique of Underlining Garments and costs $98. There is a $49 kit for this course that is included in the $98 course fee.

The online sewing classes offered by Sarah Veblen will teach what the difference is between lining, underlining, and interlining, how to decide when to use an underlining, which fabrics to use as underlining, how to cut out and apply underlining to the fashion fabric and how to make underlining do double duty as lining.

I was looking for sewing embroidery and decided to use a search engine that I had never used before. I found Dogpile and thought that it would be fun to search there. They promise all of the best search engines, piled into one.

The very first thing that I noticed in my search for sewing embroidery on Dogpile was the absence of sponsored links. The dog in the header keeps wagging his tail and that is a little distracting. Dogpile has a helpful little box on the right side of the search results to help narrow the search.

The tenth result for sewing embroidery on Dogpile was for CheapesTees.com. They have a minimum order for embroidery on garments of 48 items. They have a pricing structure of fifty cents per thousand stitches. They also list a one time fee for digitizing. This company states that the typical production time for sewing embroidery is ten days or less from receipt of signed proof.

Become.com has 64 products for sewing embroidery. I visited their website and sorted their results with the highest prices first. The Singer sewing machine that topped the list was a three thousand dollar machine. It is listed as a sewing embroidery machine.

I re-sorted my results for sewing embroidery at Become.com and a book was at the top of the list. The book is called Celebrate the Seasons with Ribbon Embroidery by Machine. The book is $2.74 and looks like a lot of fun.

I sorted the results for sewing embroidery one last time using the best match link. The first result was a book. The book was called ‘Sewing Church Linens: Convent Hemming and Simple Embroidery’ and the book is priced at $11.16. It is described as the classic book on sewing church linens, newly revised. This completely explains the materials and equipment needed. It also offers advice about a variety of hemming options and includes special instructions for sewing embroidery.

The second result in my best match search for sewing embroidery on Become.com was for a sewing machine made by Brother. It is described as sophisticated and surprisingly easy to use. There are 97 built-in Disney designs and 98 different stitch functions.

I don’t usually use Mamma.com, but I have a friend that swears by it.

They layout of my search results for sewing accessories is really easy on the eyes. It isn’t especially cluttered. There are options in a small column on the right for refining my search.

The three suggestions that are listed for refining my search for sewing accessories are sewing notions, needlework supplies and sewing machine accessories. There are also four sponsored links at the top of the page of sewing accessories search results.

Seventy six results came in for sewing accessories on Mamma.com. The first result was for Jenny’s Sewing Studio. They sell retail sewing machines. They appear to specialize in Singer machines and refer to the Singer sewing machines as their life blood.

Jenny’s Sewing Studio does not just maintain an online presence; they operate a brick and mortar store in Salisbury, Maryland. The website itself is not especially fancy, but has links to many more things than just sewing accessories. The ‘What’s New’ link took me to three very nice sewing machines.

The second result for sewing accessories on Mamma.com is for a United Kingdom company called Sewing Machine Sales. This doesn’t seem like a creative name, but it is very descriptive. They have seven different brand logos for sewing machines on their main page for their website.

At the bottom of the page of sewing accessories search results, there were two more sponsored links. The first link was for Overstock.com, which I’ve used before and like and the other link was for CreateForLess.com. I used the link to the CreateForLess.com website and really liked the layout and design elements. The website was easy to navigate.

Links from my search results for sewing accessories took me to About.com. This does not surprise me in the least. About.com turns up everywhere when I am looking for just about any information. It doesn’t really seem to matter what the topic is, About.com has something to say about it.

There are many brands to choose from when finding a computerized sewing machine. I may not have actually known all of them, but they are cleverly listed to the left of my search result to assist in narrowing my selection.

In addition to being able to narrow my search result for a computerized sewing machine by brand, I am further able to narrow my search by condition. The choices for conditions are new, refurbished and used.

I narrowed the search for a computerized sewing machine to include only refurbished items and the only brand represented in that grouping was Brother. All seven of the computerized sewing machine auctions were hosted by the same seller and had the exact same pricing, $139.99.

The only brand name for a computerized sewing machine that I could come up with on my own prior to searching on eBay was Singer. In my search result, Singer wasn’t even the brand with the most representation. Brother makes a computerized sewing machine that has a 25 year warranty.

I went over the eBay Stores website and found 34 stores with items matching my computerized sewing machine search. The Easy Terms Sewing and Vacuum Center eBay Store is the eBay store with the most matching items. They are also the seller with the refurbished Brother computerized sewing machine auctions.

I looked at the eBay store that was last in my search results for my computerized sewing machine search. The eBay store was called Indoor Flea Market and they had one computerized sewing machine in their store. The computerized sewing machine was a Singer 6268 with a Buy It Now price of $199.

The eBay store that was the next to the last result in my computerized sewing machine search of eBay Stores was a drop-off site in Portland that sells items on eBay for people. This eBay store in Portland has 91 different items available right now that are all very different.
