World Snooker

Snooker, a game similar to pool, is played throughout the world. The snooker world championship started in 1916. Joe Davis is credited for organizing the event. The game continued to be very popular until the late 1950’s. In 1958, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association decided that due to lack of interest in the game, a tournament would not be held that year. As a result, there was not a world championship game from 1958 to 1963.

In 1969, The Pot Black Tournament was held. This particular tournament was televised. The world Championship Cliff Thorburn, became famous in 1982 for scoring the highest score possible of 147. This was done during a televised tournament. The tournaments have taken an interesting twist. In 2006 it was announced that the tournaments for 2006-2010 would be held online at eight-eighty eight.com.

To become a profession snooker player, you must have the highest rankings among all registered snooker players in the world. The automatically qualify for the final rounds of the annual tournament. The name of the tournament changes often because of the sponsorship for the event. There are numerous tournaments held for amateurs as well. However, the prizes and the publicity for such tournaments are not as great.

The game of snooker has found itself in a world wide spotlight. More people from all various countries are entering the tournaments. The World Tournament of 2005 was won by a man from China. This sport provides the opportunity for participants to compete against others with similar skills of the game.

While there are many variations of snooker, the World Tournament has a strict set of established guidelines that all players must follow regarding play and points. This was established because people in different areas of the world often play the game slightly different. This was very confusing in early tournaments, and led to many people feeling angry and cheated during those tournaments.
