The phenomenon of collection trading cards began in 1887 with baseball cards. Billions of baseball cards are in circulation today. Some are valued at just a few cents while others are worth thousands of dollars. There are over eight million trading cards for sale in the United States alone. The craze of collection trading cards spans across all generations. People collect trading cards for sports teams, cartoons, rock and roll bands, and anything else you can imagine. For youth the most popular trading cards are Yugioh and Pokemon. For adults the most popular are baseball and football.

Yugioh Trading Cards

Yugioh made its first appearance in Japan in 1966. It was a weekly comic strip series. In 1998 it was made into a twenty seven show television cartoon, with trading cards soon to follow. The cards are distributed by Upper Deck Management. The cards are of various creatures with various powers. To promote the cards, Upper Deck Management holds tournaments all over the United States. The do not allow the use of any cards not produced by them in the tournaments. They currently have produced over five hundred Yugioh trading cards. The tournaments continue to change and grow as new cards are frequently added.

Pokemon Trading Cards

Pokemon trading cards surfaced in 1996 after Nintendo distributed games based on the Japanese program for Gameboy and the cartoon was featured by Warner Brothers. Each Pokemon has its own features and powers. Humans are Pokemon trainers. They capture Pokemon to become Pokemon Masters. Pokemon is short for Pocket Monster.

Football Trading Cards

Football is considered the all American sport. Football trading cards emerged in 1894. The set contained 35 cards of Ivy League Players. One card failed to list the name of the player. He is believed to be from Harvard. This is one of the most sought after football trading cards. It is very valuable because of how old it is as well as the error on the card.

Baseball Trading Cards

Baseball trading cards are credited with being the first subject for such cards. Today there are more than eight million trading cards on the market in a wide range of subjects. Baseball cards were originally designed to be mementos of the games. In the 1860’s baseball cards were printed up to use as advertisements for games. On the front of the card was a picture of a team or a player. On the back was an advertisement by one of the team sponsors.
