Encyclopedias
Encyclopedias are books that offer a wealth of information on various topics. Many people use them to complete research. Until the internet took over as the most popular resource for research, people relied on encyclopedias to provide them with information. Today there are even online encyclopedias that people use for research.
The concept is the same except you no longer have to go to the library and browse through the right book. Many families even had complete sets of encyclopedias in their home for their children to learn from. Of course this all changed with the introduction of home computers and the internet.
The concept of using encyclopedias to collect information in one central location has been around since early times. It wasn’t until the mid 1950’s that they became a popular item in most homes. Encyclopedia Britannica sold them in complete sets. They were quite expensive but families could pay for them in installments.
To keep up with computer technology, many of the major encyclopedia manufacturers now offer them on a CD ROM. This is a much cheaper method for them then printing out a set of bound books. Therefore the cost of an encyclopedia set for your computer will cost you much less than a set of them for your home.
They are great for college students who always have plenty of research to do. While you can use the internet, it is important to realize that just because you read something on the internet, it isn’t necessarily fact.
In addition to the savings, a major advantage is that updates can be automatically added to your system when changes or additions to the material are added. With a home encyclopedia set you will find some of the information outdated within a short period of time. This can be frustrating after all the money you have invested in the set of encyclopedias.
While the majority of encyclopedias offer content on a wide range of information, there are some encyclopedia sets that are very specific. For example there are Life & Science encyclopedias and medical encyclopedias that only offer information in those areas. There are also some that feature specific information relating to a hobby. For example there are boating encyclopedias as well as some for fashion.
