Wikipedia Encyclopedia

Volunteers from all over the world write the content found in the Wikipedia encyclopedia. Thus the name Wikipedia as Wiki means collaboration. Anyone has the ability to edit the material on any given topic found on the site. Since it was established in 2001 the encyclopedia has grown tremendously both in the amount of material offered and the number of people who use it.

Wikipedia is a fascinating online encyclopedia where you can find information on thousands of different topics. Using it is free and very easy. All you have to do is type in the keyword of what you are looking for and then select the most relevant topic that comes up from the list of choices.

In addition to providing you with information about that topic, there are often links throughout the text you can click on to get more information about a given subject. At the end of the information you can find several links to related information. Looking up information on the site is free as well.

While this has proven to be a very valuable resource for individuals to use online, there is some controversy about the accuracy of the information found on the site. Individuals are able to submit information to the encyclopedia but sometimes the information isn’t correct. Many people take what information they find on the internet at face value so that is definitely a concern. There is a place to report inaccuracies you come across on the site but most people aren’t looking up information about topics they already know about.

The articles found on Wikipedia are continually being changed by readers and editors as inconsistencies are identified. New information is continually added as well, making it a valuable resource for finding out the latest information on any given topic. Since the writers and readers come from all backgrounds, all of the information is presented in a non biased format.

One of the biggest problems is individuals changing material on Wikipedia to be destructive. Close monitoring of changes has to be done to take care of such issues. Many people also try to use Wikipedia as a place to post their personal views but that is not allowed. The goal of the site is to offer free information that is current and accurate to anyone interested in exploring the ideas or concepts they choose.
