Forensic Linguists

Forensic linguistics is a sub category of linguistics, which is the study of various languages. Forensic linguistics is a type of applied science that deals with the intermingling of language, laws, and crimes. Forensic linguists pertains to specific languages used in different aspects such as the law, business, and other areas.

Forensic linguistics is often used in a court of law in regards to cases that deal with issues over trademark violations, determining the specific meaning of contractual clauses, identifying and profiling threatening letters that are sent to individuals, determining if plagiarism has taken place, and other areas where the lines are not black and white in regards to the meanings of the language or written concepts involved.

Anyone who is trained in forensic linguistics may be asked to testify on behalf of the prosecution or the defense for any given situation. This expert information holds a great deal of credibility and weight in a court of law. Many forensic linguistics find employment as a paid consultant for the courts or for various law firms. This often requires extensive education in the area of the law as well as linguistics.

Forensic linguistics also pertains to the medical field where there are a variety of different languages taking place that involve medical terminology and procedures. A forensic linguist can help to determine if the best interest of the patient was considered when there are conflicts. They can also help translate the information to someone from another culture or who speaks another language. In many cases it can be as simple as translating the medical terminology into information that normal people without a medical background can comprehend.

Of all the areas of linguistics, forensic linguistics is the most complicated. This is because linguistics by itself is very in depth but adding the element of either the medical field or the law to it makes it extremely difficult as both of them are broad concepts on their own standing. Yet forensic linguists can offer one of the most interesting jobs in the field because of the different elements attached to it. There are also different types of jobs that a person with forensic linguistic backgrounds can get as they are always needed.
