Thos who study theoretical linguistics look for comparisons among languages and clues to the origins of various languages.

Applied linguistics refers to the process of actually applying the information from the theoretic part of linguistics. This includes the process of teaching a foreign language to students, speech therapy, and translations between various languages. There are so many different languages and variations of them that the area of linguistics is quite complex. Most people who study them become experts in a few languages and have a basic understanding of the parts of others. There are simply too many languages for someone to explore them all in depth and retain the knowledge surrounding them.

The majority of people studying in linguists focus on the spoken language rather than the written language. This means there is even more variations because the way that a particular language is written may be enunciated differently in two separate cultures. While the area of written language is very important to linguists too, it doesn’t hold the same value as spoken languages.

Those who specifically study written languages are dealing with a particular area of linguistics. They often focus on the ancient written languages from historical times when there is no spoken language left to work with. This type of linguistics is commonly referred to as Historical Linguistics.

The Linguistics Society of America was established in 1924 to help with the advancement of language as a science. It was recognized that to fully understand the different cultures in our society their languages had to be understood as well. Anyone who studies linguists should have no difficulty securing various jobs including translating and interpreting. There are also high profile jobs that include monitoring other languages for terrorism and spying.
