Plagiarism and School
Students are faced with a lot of pressure to do well. That is one reason why plagiarism and school often go together. Students find themselves with a lot of work to do. And they either don’t have the desire to finish the work, or they don’t have the time. So to many students who are simply not thinking, plagiarism and school seem to go together. They search for other ways to get their work done with minimal effort. Some students simply hire another person to do their assignment for them. This has been a problem for years but the internet has made it even easier to get this done. And other students don’t even bother hiring people to do their work. Instead, they simply plagiarize other people’s work.
The students may think that they are just finding a shortcut to getting a good grade. But this presents a big problem. It is not only unfair to those who do bother to do their work, it is also considered cheating. So teachers are faced with a growing problem. Cheating was always an issue, but now with the internet, it is even worse. So it is up to everyone involved to create a system of checks and balances that will prevent people from cheating. But this is somewhat exhausting. Unfortunately, unless it is obvious, most cases of plagiarism in school go unnoticed.
Another way that you can combat this is to inform students of the consequences of plagiarism. This means that you need to outline the law to them. Unfortunately this will not stop everyone from doing it. Those who really want to take a shortcut and coast through life without doing work will find ways to take other people’s work and pass it off as their own. However, it is important for everyone to understand what can happen. Plagiarism is illegal and sometimes students do not think about the long term affects of what can happen. Depending on where they are, they could actually get expelled. If you are in college this could taint your record and prevent you from getting the education that you deserve. Remember that if you are in school, it is better to do your own work.
