A playwright is a person who writes drama. They can be written for performing arts or in a literary form. The earliest forms of playwrights date back to the 5th Century BC. Works of Ancient Greeks are still around today. The work of Shakespeare is probably the most well known playwrights in modern society.

Famous Playwrights

William Shakesphere is considered to be one of the most famous playwrights. His work helped shape English Literature. His works include a variety of themes including comedy, history, tragedy, and poetry. His birthday is not known for sure, but it is guess around April of 1564. Only two authentic paintings of Shakesphere exist.

Female Playwrights

American culture has been greatly influenced by female playwrights who bring culture and ethnic diversity to their writings. Today, there are numerous female playwrights. However, their work continues to be put on the back burner in our society. Only nine Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded to women in this field. Five of them have only been won in the past 15 years.

Neil Simon

Neil Simon was born as Marvin Neil Simon in 1927 to a Jewish family. He was raised in the Bronx of New York. He attended New York University as well as Denver University. He began writing scripts for television with his brother in 1948. He later went out on his own and began writing for the New York theatre. Today he is well known for his contribution to the arts including screenplays, collections of writings, television shows, and television series.

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller was born October 17, 1915. He attended the University of Michigan. He then moved to New York and began writing plays about the war. His play titled the Death of a Salesman in 1947 became very popular. It tells the story of a man who is destroyed by false values that are alive in society. This play is done throughout the United States to this day. He won a Pulitzer Prize and three Tony Awards for this play. He is known as one of the most famous playwrights in American History.
