Playwrights
A playwright is a person who writes drama. They can be written for performing arts or in a literary form. The earliest forms of playwrights date back to the 5th Century BC. Works of Ancient Greeks are still around today. The work of Shakespeare is probably the most well known playwrights in modern society.
The stage can be a magical place, where written material is transformed for the audience into a piece of art. Any playwright that you plan to use as performance material has to be written with the audience in mind. That is the key difference between playwrights for theatre and those only for reading.
There are several types of playwrights for the theatre. The ten minute play is very popular. It is a compact play complete with a beginning, middle, and an end. It generally consists of one scene. One act plays run from fifteen minutes up to an hour. A good one act play focuses on only one main issue as time does not allow for complicated scenarios or intense character backgrounds. It generally has one set and one or two scenes.
Full length plays are approximately eighty minutes in length. It will consist of numerous scenes and various set changes. Most of the set changes are done quickly while you are focused on another area of the stage to keep from distracting the audience. Musicals are also very popular. The set up is very similar to that of a full length play.
The internet offers playwrights the opportunity to provide their writings for review, and possible selection for publication as a play or book. It is very important that you take the time to research such websites before you submit any information to them for review. While most are genuine resources, there are scam sites out there that will not doing anything for you except run with both your money and your creative work.
