Compromising Beliefs
When it comes to compromising beliefs, that is one situation where compromise should not be an issue. When people have a system of core beliefs that are being threatened, this is actually why some wars get started. For example, the Cold War that took place during a good portion of the 20th Century was all about one belief system against another - Democracy Vs. Communism. This is something that people were willing to fight over. Another classic belief system that has gone to war is Christianity versus other religions. This was exemplified during the crusades that happened in Europe all those centuries ago. And these are just large scale, popular examples. Countless examples of people’s belief systems being compromised which resulted in war or argument can be found all over the world at any given time. And they do not have to be religious beliefs. They can be beliefs about the environment, opinions about politics, etc.
On the one hand, it is good to not let people compromise your beliefs. On the other, is it really worth fighting or going to war over? Maybe, maybe not. Wars do not always solve the core problems and neither do arguments or fights. Talking and reaching a compromise over the compromised beliefs may be a more effective method. But this is not something that people generally want to hear. They would rather be as vocal as possible. This is harmful to those around them. If you want to make sure that you are creating a great environment, compromise is essential.
The truth is, the word ‘compromise’ does not mean you are giving up. It does not mean you are giving in. You can end the compromise with an ‘agree to disagree’ policy. That means that no one’s belief system is harmed in any way. The two parties simple agree to live together in a way that is beneficial to everyone. War and argument put a drain on resources and mental energy. Compromise is a way that can prevent that. If you need to learn how to compromise you can hire a coach, work with a therapist, find helpful books and apply the principals, and make sure that you use the skill to help bring harmony and balance to your life.
