Acid rain is the collection of rain droplets that contain pollutants such as oxide from sulfur and nitrogen. This combination creates acid in the droplets of water. Acid rain has chemical sour taste. The main sources of these pollutants are vehicles and industrial and power-generating plants. The more plants and vehicles in the area, the higher the chance of acid rain. It also depends on the climate of that particular area. Prevailing winds blow the compounds that cause both wet and dry acid deposition across state and national borders, and sometimes over hundreds of miles. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. Sunlight increases the rate of most of these reactions.

Acid rain, in the broadest terms, is acid deposits that result from sulfurs and oxides mixing with drops of rain or snow, and then falling to the ground. Wind is also a carrier of acid in the air, in a dry form. Acid rain is dangerous because it affects water supplies, the environment, wildlife, and plant life. The issue is in our own back yard as well as found globally.

Scientists coined the term acid rain in 1966, after years of tests and experiments. They final had all the pieces of the puzzle. They knew what caused acid rain. No the question was to find out how to stop it. The results of acid rain pollution can be seen throughout the world. Many people who were aware of the term didn’t realize the dangers of it. The news changes all that when it began showing photos of fish dead in lake and streams, their deaths caused by acid rain pollution in the waters. Soon after, factories came under attack because that was believed to be the source of the pollutants that created the acid.
