Cyborgs
A Cyborg is a cross between artificial intelligence and a live organism. The concept was introduced in the 1960’s to identify the thoughts about using such vehicles in outer space. A Cyborg features all the basic characteristics of an individual with the added benefits of what technology has to offer. It was thought that Cyborg’s could be taught to do all the movements of human’s and transmit information back to Earth from space.
They have been the leading roles in various movies about them becoming smarter then humans and being able to take over the world. One such movie is called I Robot with Will Smith. He has to learn to trust the Cyborg’s in order to help save the world.
While we all understand that is just a movie there are the ethical considerations regarding Cyborg’s. What if such technology was to fall into the wrong hands? Could they use it for such evil deeds? Part of the reason why Cyborg’s have not been more widely accepted is because of such fears in our society.
There are plenty of benefits from Cyborg’s though in our society. They have been used in the military as part of practice maneuvers. They have also been used in research to help understand how humans might react to a given situation. The studying of Cyborg’s has led the medical community to being able to design artificial limbs.
Cyborg’s are able to transfer data using sensors. This allows research to be conducted with the information from those sensors being used. Using Cyborg’s we are able to collect data that can be beneficial for humans. Since it is not ethical to practice questionable procedures on real humans this is the next best thing.
This leads to the worry some people have about how much Cyborg’s really feel. Is it possible that they are able to feel pain or a real connection to others like a human brain can? Scientists and researchers say this isn’t possible but many who have interacted with Cyborg’s think otherwise. This leaves them uneasy when they consider all the different things Cyborg’s are used for.
