Doves are one of those mythical animals that is actually a living animal. They make their appearance in the Bible and in various situations throughout history. They are a symbol peace and are often depicted as holding an olive branch which is also another classic symbol. So even though they are a real animal, they also have historical and cultural significance.

Mourning Doves

Mourning doves are another kind of dove that people can learn about. The misconception is that there is only one kind of dove - the white one that is most often depicted as being a symbol of peace. Well, there are a lot of other kinds of doves, including mourning doves. Mourning doves, or as the Latin name represents, Zenaida macroura, are native of certain parts of North America and Central America. Besides the Latin name, alternate names for the mourning doves are the American Mourning dove, Carolina turtledove or the Carolina pigeon. Pigeons and doves are actually related in the same family.

Ring Neck Doves

Ring neck doves are another one of those species of dove that are actually pretty common. They are also called Barbary doves and ring doves and are considered ‘domestic’ doves. This means that this is the species that is often taken in as pets. Doves are a mythical creature. They always make it in the common myths and legends and are even mentioned in the Bible. This particular kind of dove has been highly respected as a domesticated animal. They have been living in a domestic setting for two or three thousand years. That means that they have been domesticated possibly since ancient times.

Turtle Doves

What are turtle doves exactly? Most of us are familiar with the song, Twelve Days of Christmas, where the turtle doves are mentioned as being one of the gifts. But how many of us have actually seen turtle doves close up? When most of us think of doves, we usually picture the white colored doves that are a symbol for peace. But, turtle doves are another kind of dove that has nothing to do with the doves that hold the stereotype. These doves do not really look like those white doves even though they are still in the same family of birds.

White Doves

When people think of doves, white doves are what people typically think of. They are the ones that are portrayed in the movies and in literature to symbolize peace. They are also the ones that are most typically used as part of a magic act or other form of entertainment. And because of the novelty of them, they are also the most likely dove type to be purchased as a pet. However, there are several different kinds of doves so the thinking that there is only one kind of dove is not exactly correct.
