Earthquake Safety
Protecting yourself and your family from the devastation of an earthquake is a very scary thought. However, it is something many of us have to be prepared for because of the areas in which we live. While some areas are more prone to have earthquake occurrences, they can happen most anywhere at any time. It is a myth that the entire ground opens up during an earthquake and attacks like an underground serpent. The shift in the underground takes place but is over very fast.
Most people don’t realize it, but an earthquake generally only lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes. It is the after effects of the earthquake that pose the largest threats. Fires often break out from earthquakes. There is also the risk of injury from falling debris and vehicle accidents. Mudslides are also a major concern in some areas. If the area hit by the earthquake is surrounded by water, there is the possibility of devastation from a Tsunami, which is an underwater earthquake.
Since an earthquake can happen anywhere and have many effects, you can help keep your family safe by heeding any earthquake warnings. Have a central location in your home that is safe, away from windows where debris can break them. The area should also have plenty of dried and canned foods as well as drinking water. Make sure have flashlights with good batteries and a radio that operates on batteries. If you live in an area that is known for many earthquakes, consider purchasing only a one level home and have an expert come in and help you get your home set up for the best safety possible in the event of an earthquake.
Make sure your children are aware of the safety plan in your home as well as childcare providers. Keep a first aid kit readily available and make sure your family members are trained in the area of first aid. If you are away from your home, then find a secure place under a desk or other sturdy item until the shaking stops. Try to remain as calm as possible. If you are driving pull over until the shaking stops.
Aftershocks will occur once the actual earthquake is over so remain in your safe area until this too has passed. If you or others around you are injured seek medical attention. Listen to the radio for any emergency instructions. We can’t prevent earthquakes yet, but we can prepare ourselves for them as much as possible.
