An earthquake is classified as waves of energy that result from shifting masses of rock that is miles below the surface of the earth.

Some researchers predict California may one day fall into the ocean as a result of earthquakes or simply separate from the rest of the United States just like the islands of Hawaii.

Earthquakes take place all over the world on a daily basis, with more than 500,000 occurring each year. However, many of them are so low in magnitude that no one feels them. They earthquake tracking devices are the only recorded evidence that they actually took place.
