Fern Weeds

In some parts of the country and in the world, fern weeds are very common. It is not unusual to see ferns growing in locations where you don’t want them to grow, especially if the ground tends to be moist most of the time. You tend to see fern weeds in areas that typically get flooded, or in land that retains water from rainfall very well. They don’t have a far reaching way to get nutrients from the soil so having a water source close to the surface is essential for them.

So, what can you do about fern weeds? Well, if you have certain kinds of ferns growing you can pick them and eat them. Fiddleheads as they are called are the tightly coiled ferns as they look when the push up out of the earth. These fiddleheads open up and form the complete leafy fronds that make up the adult plant. But in this ‘fiddlehead’ form, ferns are very tasty and very edible. The catch is that you need to use the right ferns. A good field guide will help you identify fiddleheads so you can eat the fern weeds instead of killing them or pulling them out of the ground.

Another thing you can do about the fern weeds is simply pull them out. But neither of these things will prevent the ferns from growing in the first place. You have two choices. You can purchase fern removal and killing sprays or you can just make the ferns a part of your landscaping scheme. This member of the plant kingdom is tenacious, but it is also a beautiful addition to any garden. People purchase ferns and adopt them as part of their landscaping schemes. Why not make them part of it and save your money on the expensive ferns?

Fern weeds can be a problem for any garden. They are aggressive and once they grow, they multiply rapidly. You have three choices. You can eat them (if they are of the edible variety), pull them out, or make them a part of your landscaping scheme. Any of these options will work but keep in mind that using a weed killer is bad for the environment.
