Federal Firearms License

Obtaining your Federal firearms license is required by any individual who deals with the manufacturing or selling of firearms or ammunition. This includes pawn shops. The one exception is regarding those who trade and sell guns for private collections. This is mandated under the Gun Control Act of 1986. Anyone dealing in such activities without a license can be charged with illegal firearm activities, which is a felony under Federal Law. Be wary of online scams that offer you a Federal firearms license kit. They will generally just take your money, and then provide you with information on how to obtain the license. All the information can be found for free on the internet.

The Federal firearms license procedure is administered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE). It is overseen by the United States Department of Justice. You must be at least 21 years of age to apply for a Federal firearm license. A background check will be conducted to search for felony convictions, legal citizenship, drug use, and any mental health stays. Additional investigations will look into dishonorable discharges from the military and any type of restraining order stemming from stalking harassment, or threatening behavior.

It is very important that you complete your application completely and accurately. If you withhold or falsify information on the application, you may find yourself facing criminal charges. In addition to the application, you must submit fingerprints and a photo ID. You can generally have the fingerprints completed at your local law enforcement agency. The application fee depends on your status such as a dealer, pawn shop, importer, and manufacturer. Importers and manufacturers are also charged a fee of $500 - $1,000 for occupational fees.

Once you have obtained your Federal firearm license, it is valid for 3 years. If you change locations, you must obtain a new license as they are non-transferable. You need to be aware that having a license gives the BATFE the right to investigate your records and inventory. You will also be required to comply with annual inspections by the department. Used correctly, a Federal firearm license can provide you the opportunity to have a profitable and reputable business involving firearms and accessories.
