Gender Roles
Gender roles have more to do with our society than with the real biological differences between males and females. This is because each society has a different way of dealing with the genders. In some cultures, the women are expected to nurture the children and homes and the men are expected to work. Some societies are challenging those gender roles and others are accepting them. But one thing is for sure - the cultures throughout the world that expect one gender to have rights and the ability to work and ignore the other gender are not looked highly on by the other more ‘liberated’ cultures.
In any given society there are two kinds of gender roles. The first is what is actually specified by law. The law may have an entirely different view if the gender roles than the people actually do. The law, for example, may say that both genders have equal rights. However there may be stigmas and protocols that the people feel they must abide by even though the law states otherwise. This is an interesting problem for many people especially if you consider that gender roles are an important part of the different cultures.
If you want to learn more about the history of gender roles you can easily do so. Some colleges have different courses about gender roles and gender studies. This is a good place to start if you are at a university. If you are not at a university you may be able to attend lectures on the subject. You can also read books, articles, and information that you find online to learn about gender roles. You can approach it from all different perspectives, including those that have a lot to do with the different cultures of the world.
In some places, people feel trapped by the gender roles. The ideal thing is to live in a culture where both genders are considered equal. When both genders can vote and hold jobs, that is considered equality by law. However, look at the people. If they do not consider the law a reality, and if the government is not enforcing the law, this could be problematic. In order to have equal gender roles, that may take some time.
