Geography
The word geography refers to the ‘describing the Earth’ and most of us use it in reference to maps and how the different continents are laid out as well as the oceans that divide them. The concept of geography is very complex. Most of us take for granted the ability to look up a particular region on a map or the internet and everything is there for us. We can get a basic location or even specific information. Yet the process of collecting this information took years of research, documentation, and verification.
The concept of geography applies to much more than just the physical location of land though. It takes into consideration the areas of climate, vegetation, soil, water, and landforms. Observations are made to see how these elements interact with one another to create distinct patterns. However, these areas tend to change and modify over time due to environmental factors.
Since the concept of geography as a whole is very complex, many who study it work in one of the specific areas of the field. The two most common fields are human geography and environmental geography. The concepts of all the different types of geography focus on both quantitive and qualative data that has been analyzed.
It is important for everyone to have a basic understanding of geography, but it continues to be one area of education programs that continually gets cut back. School children are no longer learning about continents and mountain regions as they once did. This is disappointing because this is information that can really spark an interest for the children who do learn the basis concepts of geography.
With the World Wide Web exploding, there are no boundaries any longer when it comes to exploring what other countries have to offer. Wouldn’t it be nice though if the individuals actually were aware of where that country is located?
Geography is a fascinating area to explore as it is much more than just locations on a map. It gives us an insight to the land as well as the people who use the resources they have there to do all they can for the people of their culture. It is an area many of us could use more knowledge in.
