Kids Geography

Geography seems to be one of the main areas where many people lack sufficient knowledge. The key to changing this for future generations is getting kids interested in geography at a very young age. While they can’t be expected to learn specifics they can embrace the concept that there is a whole big world out there for them to find out about. This can be a solid foundation for them to explore later in life.

One reason why children are lacking in knowledge about geography is the programs continually get cut from school curriculums. Unless the child takes geography courses in college they often don’t learn more than the names of the continents and how to read a map. It is unbelievable the number of children who complete high school but can’t effectively complete a basic geography quiz.

The internet offers plenty of excellent resources for kids to learn about geography in terms that they can comprehend. There is plenty of time for them to learn the in depth subject matter later on. The key point is to stir up their curiosity about geography so they will always try to find out more about what it has to offer. There are monthly magazines you can subscribe to that offer interesting facts relating to geography as well. Many of these magazines are specifically targeted for children of a specific age group.

It is also a good idea to encourage your school administrators to incorporate a kid’s geography curriculum into the school program. While we all know budgets are tight the process can be added to another element. For example many schools cut geography learning time to make more time for reading. What if the compromise was reading about geography related subjects?

While some creativity will have to be worked into such programs for them to meet the requirements set by the Federal government, it is imperative that all children learn the basic concepts of geography. Not just so that they can pass the quiz or test on a particular unit and then move on to something else. They need to learn about geography so they have a good understanding of our world as a whole.
