Wash your hands, and you can prevent up to 50% of germs and diseases that are spread through the air from affecting you. Considering the amount of germs out there, that is tremendous reduction by doing something so simple. This ounce of prevention can save your health in the long run. Germs wear down our immune system.

Washing your hands properly is very important. Use a mild soap. Wet your hands with warm water. Apply soap. Rub hands together, being sure to get in between each finger. Rinse the soap. Use a clean towel to dry or an air dryer. Children often either skip washing their hands or they don’t do it properly. Teach them to sing a song while they wash. Make sure they scrub with the soap before putting their hands back under the water. Too often children immediately rinse off the soap before they have scrubbed with it. If you will be somewhere that you can’t wash your hands, take antibacterial gel or wipes with you. These are proven to kill germs and you don’t need water for it to work.

Education of washing your hands needs to be taught in schools as well. Studies have been done that show only 1 in 4 children wash their hands at school after using the bathroom. And Ω of those children didn’t do it properly. That sure adds up to a lot of germs being passes around. Health classes also enforce the importance of hand washing. Unfortunately, it isn’t just children who aren’t washing their hands! Studies have shown adults don’t do it like they should either. One report on Dateline NBC showed men and women leaving the restrooms without washing their hands, then returning to the bar where they put their hand on someone and even ate peanuts available at the bar.
