Pet Sharks

Many of us enjoy having a pet around the house. For some, the pets they choose are very exotic such as poisonous snakes or pet sharks. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline had a huge disagreement over his 6 pet sharks, according to the tabloids anyway! Sharks in aquariums have become very popular. People believe that since it is in a home aquarium it is not dangerous. That is not true. All sharks have very sharp teeth. If you get bit by one, you will definitely be feeling the pain from it!

The most common sharks kept as pets are the nurse shark and the leopard shark. They grow to about 13 feet long, requiring quite a large aquarium to hold them. If they shark grows too big for the aquarium, the health of the creature will deteriorate quickly. The shark will stop eating regardless of what type of favorite foods you offer.

Animal rights activists are strongly protesting this practice, as they feel pet stores that sell pet sharks have crossed an ethical line. Their research has show that when the novelty of having the pet shark is gone, it will be quickly discarded. After tiring of having a shark as a pet, many think they can just throw it into the ocean or other body of water. Doing this will definitely result in the shark dying as it is not going to be able to adapt to the change in environment.

The controversy over sharks as pets continues. It is encouraged that if you plan to keep one as a pet, that you fully research the care it requires. If you decide not to keep the shark, contact a local aquatic park or other agency that can either pick up the shark or instruct you how to humanly remove it from your home. As with any other type of pet, it is a huge responsibility to care for.
