Shark Teeth
Shark teeth are a collectible that is in big demand it today’s market. The teeth from the Megalodon are sought by serious shark teeth collectors. Theses teeth have the highest return on the market from the entire species of sharks. Teeth from the Magalodon are very rare.
This is because the Megalodon is extinct. Fossil teeth have been found deep in the ocean floors that are over 7 inches long. While the appearance of this shark is not known, scientists and researchers believe it looked similar to the great white, only 6 times larger! The scientific information suggests the Megalodon was 5 Ω feet tall. It is also believed that the jaws of this shark were so big; it could swallow a rhinoceros whole. They most likely starved to death.
A fossil site in California has given scientists and archeologists unbelievable information about the teeth of sharks. It is believed this area, about 20 miles from central California, was once under water. Teeth from 20 different species of sharks, as well as several mammals have been found here. The area is no longer available to the public. It is estimated shark teeth are found here at the rate of 1 every 30 minutes. In addition to shark teeth, some skeletal remains, food remains, and fossil bone fragments have been located in the area.
On the other side of the United States, the very same thing takes place. Venice, Florida is known as the shark tooth capital of the world. However, in Venice you can still go dig for your own shark teeth. It has turned into a major tourist attraction. For $55 per person, you can snorkel to look for them or simply dig on the beach. The average shark tooth found here is 3 inches long, indicating much smaller sharks lived in this ocean than in the coast of California.
Every April, Venice holds a Shark Tooth Festival. It mainly consists of vendors selling the shark teeth they have found. There is also food, games, and entertainment. Other vendors join in too, selling crafts and other homemade items. It is a great place to search for that particular shark tooth to add to your collection and to see all the different teeth from the various species of sharks.
