Eclipses

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Eclipses can really be fun to watch. They are an interesting way to try to understand the moon and the sky. Solar eclipses happen in a matter of seconds and you cannot stare at the sun directly when this happens or else you could end up burning your retina, often permanently. Lunar eclipses are slower and gentler and the full ones take all night. With a lunar eclipse, the earth blocks the light that the moon gets from the sun. The reason why the moon lights up at night is because the light from the sun illuminates it. When the sun is blocked, this cannot happen.

The Moon

Friday, September 14th, 2007

The moon is one of those things that most of us notice but we do not give it much thought. Technically speaking a moon is a celestial body that has an orbit around a larger body. For example, the moon that goes around the Earth (also called the Moon) has a small gravitational pull and goes around the earth in stages and phases. But there are other planets that have multiple moons. Bigger planets such as Jupiter have more moons because their gravitational pull is stronger. It is the gravitational pull of a larger planet that has a lot to do with it. So when you study a planet, it is a good idea to study the moon or moons that go with it.

Moon Exploration

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Centuries ago, moon exploration was either never considered or people could only dream of it. Nowadays, we live with the knowledge that man has already made it onto the moon. This is a great thing. The moon is very much a part of our very planet. Without it the tides would not exist. We would not have something to light up the night sky. We need to understand that the moon is something to be explored and preserved and not exploited. We went to the moon once and no people would like to get there again. But at what cost? As with any new frontier people have dreams to build on it, vacation on it, and in general make sure that they can use it and experience it. Who knows what kinds of consequences this will actually have?
