Eclipses
Monday, September 17th, 2007Eclipses can really be fun to watch. They are an interesting way to try to understand the moon and the sky. Solar eclipses happen in a matter of seconds and you cannot stare at the sun directly when this happens or else you could end up burning your retina, often permanently. Lunar eclipses are slower and gentler and the full ones take all night. With a lunar eclipse, the earth blocks the light that the moon gets from the sun. The reason why the moon lights up at night is because the light from the sun illuminates it. When the sun is blocked, this cannot happen.
