Topsoil
Topsoil is the layer of soil that is at the surface. It is quite literally the soil that is on the ‘top’ of the earth. This is the soil that needs to be fertile so that plants can grow. There all kinds of different forms of topsoil. They range in color and function. In some places the topsoil is a rich brown color. In other places it is a red color. Some places don’t have fertile top soil and it is more like sand. The type of topsoil that a particular place has determines what kind of plants will grow.
If you want to do some gardening, it is important to figure out exactly what is in your topsoil. In order to make sure that you can successfully grow things, you will need to understand what the PH level is and what minerals are in the soil. Different plants require different minerals to thrive. For example, tomato plants need adequate calcium so that the plant doesn’t develop spots on it. If you want to grow something, it is a good idea to know what the plant needs so that you can replace the mineral with something such as fertilizer or bone meal.
One good way to boost your topsoil is to add rich compost. You can purchase compost from a garden shop or you can have your own compost pile or bind. The compost is filled with minerals and helps make the soil very fertile. It doesn’t take much to set up a compost pile or bin. If you have a large yard you can just reserve a corner of it. Or you can purchase a bin. You can put food scraps and lawn clippings such as grass in the pile. This is the best way to boost your topsoil.
If you have really poor soil, you may need to pay a service to come in and put down fertile topsoil. This is especially important in areas that are too dry to have grass grow. In these climates, it is possible to have grass and plants grow, you just need to make sure that you bring in some fertile soil and also give it adequate water.
